Biden, 82, underwent tests that detected a prostate nodule. On Friday, May 16, “doctors confirmed a cancer with a Gleason score of 9 (Group 5), indicating high aggressiveness.”

However, they noted that the tumor responds to hormonal treatments, “which opens up effective therapeutic options. Biden and his family are evaluating strategies with specialists to address the disease.”

As you may recall, the former US president overcame a cancerous lesion in his chest in 2023 after undergoing successful surgery. Last year, Biden’s doctor declared him fit to continue his duties as president. Having received his prostate cancer diagnosis last Sunday, he “is now facing complex treatment, but with optimism.”

According to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the measure will take effect on January 13, 2025, just seven days before the end of his administration and the beginning of a second term for President-elect Donald Trump.

“The final rule granting this new benefit will support American employers, foster economic growth, and improve access and employment authorization for eligible individuals by permanently increasing the automatic extension period of employment authorization and employment authorization documentation from up to 180 days to up to 540 days for eligible foreign nationals who timely submit an application to renew their work permit,” according to the Office of Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS).

The resolution is the result of the backlog of cases currently held by USCIS, according to José Guerrero, an immigration attorney practicing in Miami, Florida. By the end of June of this year, the agency “had accumulated more than 9.2 million benefit applications, according to its database.”

USCIS clarified that “renewal applicants eligible for an automatic extension of the EAD are responsible for submitting documents showing that they continue to have employment authorization.”

According to the Government’s announcement this Tuesday, the new program “will allow the regularization of more than half a million migrants living in the country without legal status.”

The program will allow immigrants without a residence permit but who are married to Americans, in addition to their children, to obtain said permit “without having to leave the country to apply for it.”

It will be a relief for those foreigners who have been living in the United States for at least 10 years “and are married to a US citizen before June 17, 2024,” the White House said.

Government estimates suggest that nearly 500,000 immigrants, added to some 50,000 stepchildren of US citizens, will be able to benefit from the new plan. However, it is clear that the authorities will review each application and those that are approved will have a period of three years to request permanent residence.

During that time, they will be able to remain in the country “and apply for a work permit of up to three years. Once permanent residence, also known as a green card, has been obtained, the beneficiary can apply for citizenship.”

Biden’s new plan also seeks to make it easier to “obtain work visas for graduates of American higher education centers, as long as they have received a highly qualified job offer.”

In his presidential election campaign, Biden launched a drastic measure to reduce asylum requests on the border with Mexico.

The order “will allow US authorities to deport those who do not pass strict asylum standards when the figure of 2,500 daily detentions at the border is exceeded for an average of seven days, senior US officials told the press.”

Given that the figure of 2,500 arrests is being exceeded with an average of 4,200 arrests per day that occurred in April, the executive order came into effect this Tuesday. Regarding the protocols for requesting asylum, it was indicated that they will be relaxed again when this number decreases to 1,500 on average over 14 days.

Deportations will be carried out if migrants cannot demonstrate “that there is a reasonable possibility” of risk of torture or persecution if they are returned to their country of origin. U.S. officials have stated that they will adhere to the obligations of the United Nations convention against torture, “which prohibits deporting someone to a country where they may be tortured.”

The situation will vary depending on the nationality of the migrant or asylum seeker. “Those who are Mexicans or nationals of Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua and Venezuela will be returned directly to Mexico under prior US agreements with Mexican authorities.”

Migrants arriving at the border from other parts both inside and outside the American continent, such as Colombia or Ecuador, will be expelled on deportation flights. There are exceptions: “unaccompanied travelers traveling north are not subject to the restrictions, as are victims of human trafficking, those facing an acute medical emergency or an extreme threat to their life and safety.”

On the other hand, authorities will continue processing asylum cases for people who have requested an appointment through the CBP One mobile application, with an approximate capacity of 1,450 daily appointments to request asylum.

Among the measures, “the illegalization of wash-trading and the imposition of a special tax on electricity costs for cryptominers” have been mentioned.

The measures were first mentioned in 2023, when Biden called for more crypto taxes. Now, the Department wants to impose a special tax on “any company that uses computing resources… to mine digital assets” of 30 % of the electricity costs used for mining.

If the proposal is approved, crypto miners will be required to “declare the amount and type of electricity used, as well as the cost, when acquired externally.”

The measure would apply even to miners who rent equipment, who must present the electricity values. On the other hand, companies that use off-grid energy must pay 30 % of the estimated cost.

Last year, when the President of the United States made the proposal for the first time, he indicated that despite being virtual, the energy consumption linked to these massively produced currencies is real, involves costs, and those involved must pay them.

The Treasury also addresses the issue of security with respect to cryptocurrencies, which is why it proposes that money laundering rules be applied to them.

With Halley’s resignation, Trump becomes the de facto candidate of the Republicans. Involved in legal matters, trials and accusations, the former US president remains in the fight to return to rule the White House.

There was speculation that Haley, the former governor of South Carolina and a former member of Trump’s cabinet, might call for a vote for Trump, putting aside old grudges. However, this did not happen. The truth is that Trump is now the only Republican Party candidate for president.

During Super Tuesday, Trump focused on highlighting Biden’s advanced age to seek a second term; aspect that unleashed comments for and against.

According to the analysis, the continuous migratory flow that began in 2022 is projected to extend until at least 2026, thus exerting a positive effect on national economic growth.

The Bureau’s forecasts have been adjusted, with the expectation that by 2033, the U.S. labor market will have 5.2 million more people than anticipated in previous reports.

As a result, US Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is expected to increase by $7 trillion between 2023 and 2034, with a further $1 trillion increase in government revenues.

The report argues that immigration will contribute an average of 0.2 percentage points to the country’s GDP.

However, despite these positive projections, the report also points to growth in the federal debt, reaching an all-time high of 116 % in 2034 and forecasting a continued increase to 172 % in 2054.

In addition, the government deficit is expected to increase from $ 1.6 trillion in 2024 to $ 2.6 trillion in 2034.

The release of this report coincides with a heated debate in Congress between Democrats and Republicans over measures to impose immigration restrictions at the border.

While President Joe Biden’s administration has proposed limiting asylum applications on the southern border in exchange for approving new military aid funds for Ukraine, the Republican wing closest to former President Donald Trump is reluctant to give in to these proposals, especially in an election year, even though some of the measures have been called for years by conservatives.

Under the proposed new rules, fees will be reduced by preventing banks from applying hidden fees that inflate the fees consumers have to pay.

Biden noted that for a long time some banks have imposed exorbitant overdraft fees, sometimes as high as $30 or more, especially hitting the most vulnerable Americans as banks increase their profits.

The president regards this practice as exploitation and seeks to address it with the proposed new regulations.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Consumer Financial Protection (CFPB), overdraft fees could be reduced from the $26 most consumers currently pay to $3.

It is estimated that these measures could save the average American family about $150 a year, which would total about $3.5 billion a year for all consumers in the country.
