The deadline for announcing the replacement for the current Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, is January 1, 2027. In this regard, the current President of Chile, Gabriel Boric, announced on Monday the formal registration of former President Michelle Bachelet for the position.

Boric, who will leave the presidency on March 1, when José Antonio Kast will assume the office, highlighted Bachelet’s track record, emphasizing that “she already has the support of Mexico and Brazil, the two most populous countries in Latin America.”

According to Boric, the Chilean former president’s candidacy represents a shared hope: “that Latin America and the Caribbean will make their voices heard in building collective solutions to the tremendous challenges of our time.”

In addition to Bachelet, other candidates from the region who announced their candidacy include “the former vice president of Costa Rica, Rebeca Grynspan, current head of Trade at the organization; and the current director of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the Argentine Rafael Grossi.”
