The case of Jair Bolsonaro, former Brazilian president, is in the spotlight after the Supreme Federal Court found him guilty of attempted coup d’état in 2022, with a sentence of 27 years and three months in prison.

Bolsonaro’s defense could appeal the decision, arguing that the sentence was excessive. Therefore, they are considering appealing to international courts.

Defense attorneys Celso Vilardi and Paulo da Cunha Bueno stated that “the ruling of the First Chamber of the Supreme Federal Court is unacceptable,” adding: “The former president’s defense (…) respects the decision (…). However, it cannot fail to express its profound disagreement and indignation with the terms of the majority decision.”

Bolsonaro is currently under house arrest. The former president’s age and the various surgeries he has undergone would be mitigating factors for the defense to request that he continue under this condition.

The judge in charge of the investigations against the former president, Alexandre de Moraes, “affirmed that the decision to arrest him is due to the former president’s failure to comply with the precautionary measures imposed on him last month, including refraining from posting on social media.”

The jurist also prohibited Bolsonaro from receiving visitors, except from lawyers or individuals authorized by the Supreme Court, as well as from using cell phones directly or through third parties. This restriction also applies to visitors, who will not be allowed to take videos or photos.

The measure has sparked criticism not only from the former president’s family, but also from US President Donald Trump, who has questioned the judicial process from its inception.

This Sunday, the rejection of the highest electoral court of Jair Bolsonaro’s appeal against the disqualification that was imposed on him last year for the 2030 elections in Brazil was announced.

The president of the Superior Electoral Court, Alexandre de Moraes, was in charge of making the decision, after considering “the appeal presented by the defense of the leader of the Liberal Party to be outside the rules.”

The ruling occurred on Friday, May 24, and was published in the electronic system of the Judiciary this Sunday, according to the state agency Agencia Brasil.

As will be remembered, the former president of Brazil, Jair Bolsonaro, was convicted “in two processes by the electoral court, which determined in 2023 that he had violated the rules to try to take advantage in the 2022 presidential elections, which he finally lost in the second round against the president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.”

In the first conviction, Bolsonaro was disqualified until 2030 from participating in electoral processes. The argument was to have summoned ambassadors to the Alvorada Palace to denounce alleged fraud in the electoral system without evidence.

Regarding the second sentence, the former president was disqualified until 2030 after using the structure of the State during the events for the Bicentennial of Independence, on September 7, 2022, “to promote his presidential candidacy with his presence in Brasilia and Rio of Janeiro.”

The National Consumer Price Index of Brazil registered in September a monthly setback of 0.29 %, being the third consecutive month in which prices contract in the largest Latin American economy, according to data published by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE).

With the September data, the accumulated inflation data of 2022 amounts to 4.09 %, while in the last 12 months the registration is promoted up to 7.17 %, below the 8.73 %observed in the 12 immediately previous months.

Of the nine groups of products and services analyzed by the Statistics Institute, four reduced their prices during the ninth month of the year. Thus, the transport group scored a 1.98 %drop, lower than that occurred during August (-3.37 %). This was followed by communication (-2.08 %) and food and drinks (-0.51 %).

On its side, the group of household items, which registered a 0.42 % rise in August, a 0.13 % drop in September was recorded. In the part of the increases, the costume groups (1.77 %) and personal expenses (0.95 %) highlighted. The rest of the groups have registered increases from 0.12 % in education and 0.6 % housing.

The IBGE highlights in this data the third consecutive fall in transport prices. As in previous months, the result was a consequence of the reduction in fuel prices, especially gasoline, which reduced 8.33 %.

At the geographical level, only one of the 16 regions analyzed had a positive variation. This was Vitória, with an inflation of 0.17 % driven by variations in water and sewerage and electricity rates. The greatest fall, meanwhile, was observed in the Metropolitan Region of Fortaleza (-0.65 %).

The Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of Brazil grew by 4.6% in 2021 compared to the previous year, after having registered a positive year-on-year variation of 1.6% in the last quarter of the year, according to data released by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (Ibge).

The largest economy in Latin America also managed to get out of the technical recession after posting a positive quarter-on-quarter variation in the last quarter (0.5%), after the negative records observed in the second and third quarters.

The result achieved in 2021 contrasts with the historical collapse observed in 2020 as a result of the pandemic, when the Brazilian GDP contracted by 3.9%.

2021 growth was driven by industry (4.5%) and the services sector (4.7%). In contrast, agriculture posted a negative variation of 0.2% as a result of the droughts during the third quarter, which adversely affected the primary sector and exports of crops such as sugar, corn or coffee.

In industry, the momentum observed during the period is explained by the construction boom (9.7%), which recovered from the 6.3% drop recorded in 2020. For its part, extractive industries grew by 3 % due to the increase in the extraction of iron ore.

With the new data, the inflation of the largest economy in Latin America continues to expand and is situated at a year-on-year level of 10.38 %, greater than 10.06 % observed in the 12 months immediately preceding. However, the monthly annulment of January is 0.2 points lower than that registered in December 2021.

At its last monetary policy meeting, the Monetary Policy Committee of the Central Bank of Brazil warned that inflation could be maintained above the target range of 3.5 % during this year with a point and a means of upward tolerance and to the Low and reach a level of 5.4 %.

Bolsonaro without control over Petrobras

The president of Brazil has complained, on multiple occasions, about the increase in fuel prices, especially forced by the heavy cargo sector or truck drivers, who make up part of the social support of his government and are  now threatening to go on strike as protest measure against the increase in fuels.

On several occasions, Bolsonaro has declared that he does not have the power to manage and “interfere in Petrobas and that he will not control the prices of anything”, although at the same time he recognizes that he is “looking for formulas to change the calculation method.”

After several criticisms of the increase in fuel prices, last February Bolsonaro appointed Joaquin Silva e Luna, general of the army reserve, as Petrobas president. However, the adjustments continued and it is currently expected that the necessary measures will actually be taken to reduce prices.
