The updated version of Siri, Apple’s digital assistant, will finally arrive on the market, as announced this Monday, with AI-powered features that give it the ability to handle complex tasks on iOS, iPadOS, and macOS.

The launch, anticipated by users since 2024, comes after a $250 million settlement for the lack of these promised tools that year.

During the announcement of the assistant update, the operating system updates for iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, Apple TV, and the Vision Pro headset were also revealed.

Specialized media outlets like Bloomberg have leaked that “the new version of the assistant will have the ability to access personal data stored on the device, react to on-screen information, and navigate within applications.”

Now, Siri will transform into a conversational chatbot that can compete in the market with OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Anthropic’s Claude, and Google’s Gemini.

The update has included a Google Gemini model, in addition to utilizing Google’s underlying technology through a multi-billion dollar agreement, as Apple will host a large part of the operations on the tech giant’s servers.

The developers of the different reading applications such as: books, newspapers, audios, music or videos, will be able to request access to enjoy this advantage, as long as the programmers meet some requirements.

The first of the required steps is to complete the information requested through a questionnaire, but for this, those interested must open an account within the Apple Developer Program application development service, then they must answer some questions related to the content application created and finally accept the terms and conditions of this Apple service.

Characteristics that apps must have

For Apple to consider an app suitable, in addition to meeting all the basic characteristics of a reading service, it must allow its users to register and access content and services previously purchased outside the application. But they will not be able to offer “in-app purchases on iOS or iPadOS while using the external link account right, nor provide real-time personal services.”

As will be remembered, last year Apple began this type of concessions by signing an agreement with the Japan Fair Trade Commission, with which it allowed some services to insert links within their iOS applications, but now that option has been extended to other services.

With this decision, the technology company provides application developers with “an alternative option so that users can access their applications through external links, preventing Apple from taking its usual commission, which ranges between 15 and 30 percent”

Apple’s digital store will continue to host other applications without “alternative payment systems”, with which it will pursue generating income and charging commissions for purchases made within its App Store.

The iOS 14 operating system, the latest version of the system for mobiles launched by Apple in September 2020, continues its expansion and is currently installed in 80 % of all iPhone mobiles.

According to the latest distribution data updated by Apple in the App Store, 86 % of the devices launched in the last four years already use iOS 14, while the previous version, iOS 13, barely reaches 12 % and the previous systems are they remain at 2 %.

This figure is slightly reduced in the total number of devices in the iPhone mobile ecosystem, where despite this 80 % already have iOS 14 installed. The previous version, iOS 13, is used in 12 % of mobile phones, and the previous ones barely arrive at 8 %.

Along with iOS 14, Apple also released in September the latest version of its specific operating system for tablets, iPadOS 14, which has been working independently of iOS since 2019 (previously mobile phones and tablets used the same system).

Among iPad models released in the last four years, iPadOS 14 is installed on 84 % of devices, while iPadOS 13 is relegated to 14 % of tablets and only 2% use older versions of iPadOS or iOS.
