The impact of these actions on consumers, competition, investment, and innovation will be evaluated before the new crypto regime comes into effect.

The UK Parliament is following leads indicating that cryptocurrency companies are facing difficulties accessing banking accounts and services.

“Lord Vaizey de Didcot, former Minister for Digital Economy and Member of the House of Lords, is co-chairing the group along with Labour MP Gurinder Singh Josan. Both believe the moment is particularly relevant to review the relationship between traditional banks and the digital asset industry.”

Once the evidence-gathering phase is complete, the group will prepare a report with its findings and recommendations. This will then be submitted to the “British Government, which will face a political assessment of a problem the industry has been raising for several years.”

Among the arguments presented by customers, particularly in the insurance sector, is that “financial institutions are rejecting their applications simply for trading cryptocurrencies, even when they are seeking to comply with regulatory requirements.”

Parliament has the task of determining whether the criteria and policies applied by banks are clear. “The APPG’s concerns are not limited to businesses. Its members will analyze the impact of the restrictions on consumers, competition, investment, hiring, and innovation within the UK.”

It is the second time that the company has been under judicial investigation for these alleged crimes, which could also include drug trafficking.

In fact, it is said that this new investigation would be an extension of the investigation started in France in 2023, “which focused on the alleged role of the platform in aiding money laundering and illicit financing activities, among other alleged violations.”

That year, the cryptocurrency exchange market experienced a collapse due to the bankruptcy of FTX and other platforms. “The US Securities and Exchange Commission, the Department of Justice and other agencies have taken legal action against large operators such as Binance, Coinbase and other cryptocurrency operators.”

Among the most high-profile cases was that of Coinbase, which refuted the claims and made. In the case of Binance, the company “reached the largest settlement in DOJ history. The company agreed to pay $4.3 billion in fines, with improvements in compliance and changes in management. However, the SEC case against the largest centralized company continued.”

The state agency has urged the platform to implement a clear data protection policy and indicated in a statement that “these decisions are due to an audit of the network’s activities, according to which there are indications of violations of national laws that preserve personal information in Internet traffic.”

The ANDP emphasized that the privacy of personal data must have adequate protection guarantees for minors. The social network has a period of 10 days to “deactivate the resources that allow access to its content without the need for prior registration or age verification.”

In addition, the authorities have asked TikTok to present a plan detailing the restrictions for the creation of “fake profiles,” as well as the necessary protocols to prevent the opening of accounts for children and adolescents who do not have the assistance of their parents or guardians at the time of registration.

It is important to clarify that he is accused of nine charges in a tax criminal case that began in December 2023.

About Hunter Biden, there is an investigation by the Department of Justice into his taxes, and he is accused of “evading at least 1.4 million US dollars in tax payments.”

Although he had pleaded not guilty, “one of his lawyers announced in court on Thursday that Hunter Biden planned to change his plea of innocence before the start of the trial.”

In a reversal of the decision, Joe Biden’s only surviving son “pleaded guilty to misdemeanor and felony charges without the benefits” in a deal with prosecutors hours after jury selection was set to begin.

Under the laws, the charges could carry 17 years in prison, though federal sentencing guidelines are presumed to call for a much shorter sentence, with the hearing scheduled for December 16.

Justice Alexandre de Moraes has pointed out that “social networks are not a lawless land and that they must absolutely respect Brazilian laws”. In this sense, he issued this Sunday, April 7, the order to open an investigation against Musk, “for his attacks on the Brazilian Justice and his threat not to obey determinations to block accounts on the social network.”

The investigation is based on the alleged crimes of “criminal and malicious manipulation” of the social network X, as well as obstruction of Justice. Moraes is a member of the Supreme Court “and responsible for a process on the use of social networks for the dissemination of false news and attacks on democracy.”

On April 6, Elon Musk said that in the face of the closure of accounts by the Brazilian judiciary, he would disobey such decisions even if this would trigger fines or force him to close the company in Brazil, as he considers that “the defense of freedom of expression is more important than profits”.

For his part, De Moraes warned X to “refrain from disobeying any court order already issued, or from reactivating any profile whose blocking has already been ordered by this Supreme Court or by the Brazilian Electoral Court.” The daily penalty would be 100,000 reais (about $20,000) for each account that is active on the social network.

Musk’s attitude has been considered by the magistrate as public threat, incitement to crime, obstruction and disrespect for internal justice.

An investigation has been initiated for this event that occurred approximately two weeks ago, but preliminary data indicates that the data leak includes information on the Social Security numbers of the holders.

Preliminarily, the company has indicated that they did not receive an alert of unauthorized access to their system. In addition, it emphasizes that the publication of information on the dark web does not include financial data “or specific details about call history.”

According to AT&T, “the breach shows that approximately 7.6 million current account holders and 65.4 million former account holders were affected.”

The first measure in response to the event has been to contact customers and ask them to reset their account passwords and remain alert to “changes in their accounts or credit reports.”

Meta, Alphabet, Amazon and Apple apparently are not complying with the rules of the new Digital Services Law. For this reason, the European Union is investigating the actions of these platforms.

As you may remember, the Digital Markets Law came into effect on March 7. Regarding the case of the companies investigated, Internal Market Commissioner Thierry Breton noted that they have held “conversations with the gatekeepers for months to help them adapt, and we can already see changes in the market.” But he added that they are not convinced that these companies “meet their obligations to make a fairer and more open digital space possible for citizens and companies.”

If the investigations progress and responsibilities are determined within twelve months, large fines could be established, equivalent to 10 or 20 % of the turnover of Meta, Alphabet, Amazon and Apple.

In September 2023, the Community Executive asked the video platform for information on these aspects. However, it has now decided to open a formal investigation.

As background for the measure, it is important to remember that last year the EU approved the law that forces large Internet companies to guarantee that their algorithmic systems do not display content harmful to users.

In connection with this regulation, the authorities also seek to clarify to what extent the platform generates behavioral addictions through its algorithms.

“Brussels points out that it must be studied to counteract the potential risks for the exercise of the fundamental right to the physical and mental well-being of personnel, respect for the rights of minors, as well as its impact on radicalization processes.

The protection of children and adolescents is a priority for the EU Digital Services Directive (DSA).
