The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) of the United States has approved a new regulation that will require broadband Internet operators to introduce more transparent labeling for their services, with more information for the consumer.

Information such as prices – including registration fees – as well as download speeds, the maximum amount of data allowed, network management practices or other critical information about broadband Internet services will have to be clearly displayed in labeling at points of sale, as reported by the FCC in a statement.

Encouraging competition between broadband providers

“Access to accurate and easy-to-understand information about broadband Internet services helps consumers make informed decisions and is essential to a well-functioning market that fosters competition, innovation, low prices and high quality service,” explained the US agency.

The FCC’s proposal is based on optional labels that had already been previously approved in 2016, a rule that the institution will turn into a regulation after a year of public tests to inform operators.

The FCC has begun collecting comments from consumers to assess whether the new labels can help them in the process of purchasing broadband Internet service or whether they should be updated in format and displayed in certain locations.

Starlink, Space X’s satellite internet service, has a strict policy for users downloading pirated content with their connection which may result in service suspension or termination.

A user of the Stalink program shared his experience downloading pirated content without resorting to a virtual private network (VPN). His intention, as he explains on Reddit, was to see what could happen and the answer has not been long in coming: a notice about the violation of content protected by copyright.

The message sent by Starlink to the user indicates that they know that they have used the satellite Internet service to download copyrighted content “without the right to do so.” And they warn that “downloading protected content without a license or other right to do so is a violation of Starlink’s usage policy.”

The company finished by stating that using this connection to download illegal content may lead to the suspension or termination of the service, as well as expose the user to a possible lawsuit from the owner of the rights of the downloaded material.

With the ‘Better than Nothing Beta’ program, Starlink offers early access to its Internet service, based on a network of interconnected satellites, which has currently managed to put more than 1,300 into orbit.
