Microsoft has announced that it will completely remove the Internet Explorer browser, which it began phasing out a few months ago, on February 14 through an update to Microsoft Edge.

The technology company announced in May 2020 that it would stop supporting Internet Explorer 11 as of June 15, 2022. From then on, only Microsoft Edge could be used as the main web browser developed by Microsoft.

However, as stated in a recent announcement, Microsoft will permanently disable the desktop web browser on some Windows 10 systems that still support it so far.

This change will take place on February 14, 2023 and will be made through a future Microsoft Edge update and not with a Windows update as previously communicated, as can be seen in this update.

Microsoft has indicated that this change is made with the goal of “providing a better user experience and helping organizations transition their last remaining IE11 users to Microsoft Edge,” according to the manufacturer.

Organizations that have already made this transition from Explorer to Edge with Explorer mode will not see any changes starting February 14. Those who wish to remove Explorer’s visual references in Edge, such as the taskbar or start menu, will need to disable it before February 14.

However, these visual references will be removed from Edge on June 13, 2023 with the June 2023 Windows Monthly Security Update.

Finally, Microsoft has warned companies that, if they depend on any of the services available in IE11, they must take steps to complete their transition to Edge before that date. Otherwise, employees or users will lose access to available applications dependent on Internet Explorer 11.

The company announced the end of Explorer support for its Microsoft 365 online ecosystem services in May of last year, when it indicated that the browser’s desktop app would no longer be supported for certain versions of Windows 10.

“With Microsoft Edge, we provide a path to the future of the web while respecting the past of the web. Change was necessary, but we didn’t want to leave behind apps and sites that were trusted and still work”, the company said at the time.

In the statement that formalized the end of Internet Explorer, updated at the end of last May, he explained that Edge not only offered greater security and was more modern than its predecessor, but also guaranteed “compatibility with websites and applications old and inherited from other programs”.

The withdrawal of support for Internet Explorer 11 will not affect server-based browser applications or the Windows 10 Long Term Servicing Channel (LTSC) or the Trident MSHTML engine.

The technology giant Microsoft will officially close its iconic Internet Explorer browser starting June 15 to make way for Microsoft Edge and Internet Explorer Mode with better features.

When Internet Explorer was released, it quickly became the most widely used and comprehensive web browser. However, over the years it has become one of the “most hated” programs and which has been starred in “more memes”; so in mid-June the Microsoft company will stop offering support for its desktop app.

With this decision, the company wants the few people who still use this browser to stop doing so and change their experience to the Microsoft Edge and Explorer Mode programs so that they can appreciate the advantages and options that these applications have.

As it will be remembered, the technological giant at the end of 2020 “made a drastic decision that encouraged many Internet Explorer users to change their browser”. At that time, “the company decided to block, for security reasons, several web pages in IE.”

The announced shutdown of this browser will take place on some versions of Windows 10, specifically version 20H2 or later. People who still have the Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 version installed on their computers will be able to use it.
