The new aid package was approved by the multilateral organization after the corresponding review, which revealed internal progress such as the rationalization of tax expenditures through tax exemptions or waivers; in addition, the efficiency of public spending has improved.

The assessments were conducted between February and March, according to a statement by IMF Deputy Managing Director Nigel Clarke, who confirmed that the approved disbursement, the first of 2026, is part of “a 48-month program under the IMF’s Extended Fund Facility (EFF), signed during the current administration of Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa, and in effect until 2028.”

Ecuador will have to undergo four future reviews before the end of the program to access an additional $1.276 billion.

If the progress is validated by the international organization, the South American country could access a new tranche of financing in 2026.

The IMF evaluation is part of the Extended Fund Facility (EFF), “a 48-month program approved in May 2024 and expanded in July 2025.” Furthermore, the agreement includes financing equivalent to SDR 3.75 billion – approximately US$5 billion – and aims to strengthen fiscal and debt sustainability, protect vulnerable groups, rebuild liquidity buffers, safeguard macroeconomic and financial stability, and advance structural reforms geared towards sustainable and inclusive growth.

During the fourth review, the IMF highlighted that the Latin American nation’s economy “showed signs of recovery, with projected real GDP growth of 3.4 % in 2025, low average inflation, and current account surpluses, which contributed to strengthening international reserves.”

However, it made clear that the economy still faces a scenario characterized by volatility in oil prices and international financial markets.

The IMF has begun gathering information and facts in the South American country “to determine how to proceed, whether through technical assistance or other cooperation mechanisms.”

Regarding the possibility of resuming relations with Venezuelan authorities, Kozack made it clear that this is not something that will happen immediately, as it will depend on validation by a majority vote of the organization’s member countries.

It is important to highlight that this rapprochement occurs “in a new political context,” where the acting president, Delcy Rodríguez, maintains direct contact with the Donald Trump administration.

According to the international organization’s projections regarding the global economy, its growth would reach 3.1 % in 2026.

The IMF forecasts GDP expansion in 2026 and notes that “India would once again become the fastest-growing economy, consolidating its position as one of the main drivers of global activity.” The Asian nation tops the ranking with a projected annual real GDP growth rate of 6.2 %.

Below India are Indonesia (4.9 %) and China (4.2 %), which are expected to remain among the main contributors to global growth.

Argentina, in Latin America, ranks fourth, with a projected economic growth rate of 4 %, in line with Saudi Arabia.

The IMF emphasizes that emerging economies associated with the G20, such as Argentina, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey (3.7 %), are projected to grow faster than the global average.

Some of the topics discussed during this meeting include the lack of official statistics, which hinders the IMF’s assessment, and the possibility of the country accessing $5 billion in Special Drawing Rights (SDRs), the use of which is currently suspended due to the international recognition status of the Venezuelan authorities.

Along with the IMF, other international organizations, such as the World Bank and the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), also held internal meetings with Venezuela, demonstrating the multilateral organizations’ interest in truly understanding the state of the Venezuelan economy and the technical challenges that any potential assistance from them would entail.

These meetings do not imply a pre-established plan of aid or assistance to Venezuela, but rather an evaluation of the technical and political conditions for moving toward such a scenario.

The Central American nation, governed by Nayib Bukele, is projected to have achieved this strong economic growth thanks to accelerated GDP growth driven by a boom in domestic and foreign investment.

El Salvador, International Monetary Fund, Nayib Bukele, is said to have experienced this strong economic growth thanks to accelerating GDP growth fueled by a boom in domestic and foreign investment. President Bukele “had managed to transform this economy into one of the safest places in the Americas. Now, after several years of mediocre economic growth, given the country’s level of development (middle-income economies typically grow at high rates), activity is beginning to take off with a force that has surprised even the International Monetary Fund (IMF).”

The organization has expressed surprise at this growth, noting: “The economy is expanding at a faster pace than anticipated, thanks to increased confidence, record remittances, and robust investment.”

In this regard, it is important to highlight the impact of the investment that is expanding rapidly thanks to the stability prevailing in the country, “the legal and civil security that the country has achieved in recent years.”

Speculation regarding the closure of the facilities has not been long in coming. However, the IMF has noted that this represents “a change in the dynamics of the relationship between the multilateral organization and the Central American nation, and potentially a sign of the new direction the IMF is taking in the region.”

The IMF has been in Costa Rica for decades, “working closely with the government to implement adjustment programs and economic reforms. These missions, for the most part, have been aimed at addressing macroeconomic imbalances, such as the fiscal deficit and public debt.”

Costa Rica has made progress in fiscal and economic stability and implemented the necessary reforms to strengthen its public finances. Consequently, the IMF believes it is time to move to remote technical assistance, without the need for offices.

This will allow the international organization to “optimize its resources and focus them on specific missions and analyses.” It is undoubtedly a sign that the institution is “reassessing its operating model worldwide. In a context of technological advances and greater global interconnectedness, the need for physical offices in each country has become less critical.”

With this new approach, “the IMF can now send specialized missions as needed, rather than maintaining a permanent resident team. This gives the institution greater flexibility to respond to regional economic dynamics more quickly.”

M.Pino

The country announced plans to create its first government reserve in BTC, as well as the Pakistan Digital Assets Authority, which will regulate the crypto ecosystem.

Without being consulted, the IMF has expressed deep concern about the legality of these decisions, as well as “their fiscal impact and the use of energy resources in a context of scarcity.”

Pakistan made the announcements during the Bitcoin 2025 Conference in Las Vegas, where it also announced the launch of a “state-owned digital wallet.” This initiative marks a radical shift in the country’s financial policy, shifting toward the digital economy as a strategic axis of development.

IMF representatives have requested clarification from the Ministry of Finance on the “legality of the movement and allocation of energy, especially considering the chronic electricity shortages and the country’s fiscal constraints.”

The international organization has reiterated the requirement for prior approval for new policy measures. In any case, Pakistan’s decisions are part of a broader government strategy to integrate digital assets into its national economy. In addition to the creation of the Pakistan Digital Assets Authority (PDAA), the country will launch “crypto exchanges, wallets, stablecoins, and decentralized finance (DeFi) platforms.”
