Real Sociedad defeated Atlético de Madrid 4-3 on penalties in the final of the tournament, after a 2-2 draw in regulation and extra time. Aramburu played 113 of the 120 minutes of the match at La Cartuja stadium in Seville, giving his all in the victory for the club his father supports. He filled his family and all of Venezuela with pride.

‘El Búfalo’ (The Buffalo), as he was known, was also playing his 100th match in the Real Sociedad jersey.

“We always work to make Venezuela proud. I love my country,” Aramburu told Meridiano TV after celebrating the title wrapped in the national flag.

“My dad was born in San Sebastián,” the city of Real Sociedad, and “this is a dream come true for me,” continued the Venezuelan right-back, who joined the Basque club in 2024, after turning professional with Deportivo La Guaira in the FUTVE League and beginning his career in Spain with Real Unión.

“It’s a day I’ll never forget,” he said, his voice filled with joy.

It was a final brimming with emotion from the very first minute, with fans of both teams on the edge of their seats.

Just 15 seconds into the game, in the fastest goal ever scored in a Copa del Rey final, Ander Barrenetxea headed home a cross from Gonçalo Guedes to give Real Sociedad, coached by American Pellegrino Matarazzo, the lead.

Ademola Lookman equalized for Atlético Madrid in the 17th minute, but Mikel Oyarzabal converted a penalty just before halftime, in the 45+1 minute, to restore the advantage for Aramburu and his team.

In the 83rd minute, Argentine Julián Álvarez scored for Atlético, sending the match to extra time.

Goalkeeper Unai Marrero was the hero in the penalty shootout, saving shots from Alexander Sørloth and Álvarez.

A Vinotinto embrace

Aramburu gave it his all. “I had cramps and I held on as long as I could, but I couldn’t even walk anymore,” he said about leaving the field. “We suffered, because we knew the final was going to be tough, but we are the champions!” he concluded with a smile.

His teammate Yangel Herrera didn’t play, as he continues to battle recurring injuries, but he was part of the picture.

“Winning the Copa del Rey means so much. It’s been a very difficult year for me, and winning my first title in Europe has been incredible,” Herrera told Meridiano TV. “I hope it’s not the last.”

The emotional embrace between Aramburu and Herrera after the victory was the embrace of all of Venezuela. There is talent in our football. If you stumble, you simply have to get back up.
