World air traffic reached 68.5 % of its level prior to the Covid-19 pandemic in 2022, according to the International Air Transport Association (Iata).

According to the organization, which brings together 300 airlines representing 83% of world traffic, domestic routes returned to 79.6% of their 2019 level, while international traffic, the most affected, multiplied by 2.5 and reached 62.2% of its pre-pandemic level.

Iata CEO Willie Walsh says the industry left 2022 much better off than it entered it, as most governments lifted Covid-19 travel restrictions and people took advantage of travel. Furthermore, Walsh notes that this dynamic is likely to continue into 2023 despite the overreaction of some governments to China’s reopening.

According to Iata, many countries have implemented covid tests for travelers from China, where a major epidemic rebound occurred after restrictions were lifted. The organization called this practice impulsive and ineffective.

In 2023, air traffic is expected to reach 85.5% of its pre-pandemic level.
