The adjustment comes in response to accumulated inflation of 6.2 % in August, “while the institution maintains a target of 4 %, with a tolerance margin of one percentage point above or below.”

According to the Central Bank of Honduras (BCH), part of the recent price behavior is a result of factors such as the cost of food and energy, along with “external elements affecting the Honduran economy.”

Regarding financing, the Honduran Association of Banking Institutions clarified that each bank in the country sets its rates taking into account variables such as its financing costs, available liquidity, and market conditions.

Despite criticism of the measure from economists who foresee an impact of the rate increase on sectors such as education, the BCH defends the increase as necessary to control inflationary pressures in the country.

In a climate of uncertainty, the Fed made the announcement after a lengthy meeting of its Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC).

A weaker labor market has been a key factor in this process, with President Donald Trump’s pressure on Jerome Powell continuing unabated in recent weeks.

There was only one dissenting vote, cast by the new Fed governor, Stephen Miran, whose appointment was pushed by President Trump himself. The official called for a larger rate cut.

“The Federal Reserve usually keeps interest rates high to control inflation sustainably. But this time, concerns about employment prevailed, even though inflation remains above 2%.”
