The affected social media platforms are: TikTok, YouTube, Instagram, Reddit, Facebook, X, Threads, Snapchat, Twitch, and Kick.

Starmer indicated that “the decision was not taken lightly, but rather took into account parents’ concerns about minors’ access to these networks.”

Key browsing parameters

This information establishes clear parameters such as “time spent per session.” In this sense, YouTube leads the ranking, with almost 20 minutes per session (19’35”), well ahead of the following: X.com (12’19”), Bet.br (11’35”), and Google (10’05”).

(Reference image source: Szabo Viktor on Unsplash)

Regarding the number of page views per session, X.com stands out with 14.13, followed by Instagram with 12.17 and YouTube with 12.14.

The use of AI cannot be ignored. ChatGPT and Gemini are at the forefront, but Wikipedia’s continued presence is also surprising.

Concerning the time users spend connected to these top 20 websites, “YouTube leads the ranking, with almost 20 minutes per session (19:35), well ahead of the following: X.com (12:19), Bet.br (11:35), and Google (10:05).”

Social networks lead internet searches

The report’s data indicates that 93.8 % of users globally connected to social media platforms; “almost the same proportion (93.6 %) as were on instant messaging applications.”

Likewise, 79.3 % connected to web search engines or specific portals; 74.4 % accessed email services and 74.2 % visited shopping-related websites.

The social network seeks to reduce the saturation of accounts that repeat posts and favor original content, such as photos taken by the creator, edits that reflect a personal vision, as well as image series, tutorials, or original visual narratives.

The penalty will be visible in the loss of feed recommendations. The platform aims to give greater value to original and distinctive creators, drastically reduce the reposting model, among other things.

As for those who use this method, all is not lost. To maintain their accounts, avoid losing visibility, and prevent appeals, they can replicate content or offer their opinion on the topic, but must always credit the original author.

According to a press release, the new feature provides “a platform that allows for the efficient management of all user experiences.” They stated that “with the diverse ways of creating, learning, and communicating today, centralization becomes essential to offer a smoother and more practical experience.”

The update will be rolled out gradually throughout the year, allowing users to see “all their linked applications and devices in a single account center.”

However, in the specific case of WhatsApp, users will have the option to “include or exclude their account from the hub, thus ensuring greater control over their preferences. This is especially relevant in a context where privacy and personalization are top priorities.”

The feature prioritizes security, so Meta indicated the possibility of setting a single password for all access, simplifying the process. Furthermore, registration on new applications can be done using information from existing accounts.

Authentication methods will be more secure than traditional passwords. “Meta has incorporated options such as facial recognition and fingerprint scanning, as well as the ability to use the device password to log in.” All of this is to reinforce the protection of the user and their sensitive information.

The platform stated that “this strategic move will benefit non-professional users by giving them new features and metrics, while also benefiting Instagram itself by encouraging amateur profiles to increase their efforts (and activity) on the platform to grow as creators and unlock more professional tools.”

Now, it is no longer necessary to convert your profile to a “Creator Account” to enjoy features such as Content Scheduling, Trending Audio, and the Instagram Insights Dashboard.

This will allow anyone to “schedule posts, explore trending songs, audio, or sounds on the platform, and better understand their account’s performance thanks to access to enhanced metrics.”

However, Test Reels, Channels, and the IG Live feature will only be activated for public personal profiles with more than 1,000 followers.

The only features that remain exclusive to professionals are monetization options and advertising tools.

It’s important to clarify that to try the extended professional features on Instagram, simply go to Settings and select “Account Type & Tools.” However, users with private personal accounts will not be able to use them.

In this total, “Facebook and WhatsApp already have more than 2 billion daily active users, with Instagram slightly below,” according to the Q4 2025 earnings report.

The charts from the company, led by Mark Zuckerberg, show “a continuous quarterly growth for the past two years.” Specifically, “in the fourth quarter of 2025, the number of daily active users increased by 1.19 % compared to the previous quarter, representing a slight slowdown (1.72% between Q2 and Q3).”

Regarding how activity is specifically distributed, the data indicates that if a person uses Facebook, WhatsApp, and Instagram today, “for meta-analysis purposes, they count as 1 person in the total (of 3.58 billion).” On the other hand, “in individual statistics, they count as 1 daily user on Facebook, 1 on WhatsApp, and 1 on Instagram.”

The idea was to ask the participants, nearly 400 young people between 18 and 24 years old, not to use Instagram, Snapchat, TikTok, and X for seven days. Dr. John Torou, co-author of the study, notes that some participants did not complete the test. Nevertheless, the results are encouraging, as there was significant clinical improvement “across key areas after just seven days. The data indicated that symptoms of depression decreased by 24.8%, anxiety by 16.1%, and sleep problems fell by 14.5 %.”

Digital phenotyping revealed that, although social media use dropped from about two hours a day to just 30 minutes, total screen time increased slightly by 4.5 %, and participants spent 6.3 % more time at home. This suggests that participants shifted from endlessly scrolling through TikTok to other digital activities such as messaging, browsing the internet, or playing games.

According to the specialist, “the problem isn’t the screen itself, but how we use it. The study indicates that screen time has a weak association with mental health, since what’s truly harmful is problematic use, such as negative social comparison or emotional addiction to the platforms.”

As you may recall, in 2020 the Commission sued Meta, “accusing it of violating antitrust law by acquiring potential emerging rivals such as Instagram and WhatsApp to avoid having to compete with them.”

Judge Boasberg dismissed the case after a seven-week trial, where Mark Zuckerberg, owner of the brand, argued that Meta faces strong competition from YouTube and TikTok.

The argument was accepted by the legal expert, who stated that “TikTok and YouTube prevent Meta from monopolizing the social media market.” He also referred to the changes that have occurred in the social media sector since the Commission filed the case, mentioning the generation of content with AI, which weakened the agency’s arguments.

The ruling in favor of Meta is also a victory for Silicon Valley, “as US regulators increasingly seek to curb the power of Big Tech” such as Google, Apple, and Amazon.
