Water stress, as water scarcity is known in Latin America, is being addressed in Mexico with the help of artificial intelligence, according to José Antonio Tiburcio, Director of Innovation and Small Farmers at Bayer Mexico.

Water scarcity affects human and animal life, agriculture, and all industrial activity. Hence, the need to use advanced technologies that can provide solutions to the water crisis. With the incorporation of AI, Big Data, and IoT, Mexico is advancing in efficiency and productivity. Among the achievements is a saving of up to 30 % in water use, “especially in corn, watermelon, and similar crops,” where digital innovation helps conserve resources and also boost agricultural yields.

“The urgency is clear: collaboration between sectors to digitize and ensure the sustainable future of agriculture in Mexico.”

Farmers have incorporated automated systems, among other tools, to meet current food demand, given the inefficiency of traditional systems. Other technologies help monitor weather activity in real time, benefiting farmers whose crops depend on rainfall.

Applications developed by Bayer Mexico have led to a 30% saving in water consumption, improving farm yields and increasing production.

It is estimated that nearly 15 % of Mexican agriculture “has implemented some technology to digitize its operations, with the main barriers to entry being a lack of capital, low digital literacy, and a lack of government support to make this sector more efficient.”
