Cybercriminals are currently targeting the PayPal platform with a new, highly convincing phishing attack on users, who become victims by opening a dangerous email.

Through a message in their email accounts, warning that an amount has been debited from their PayPal accounts, the attackers convince customers that they should contact the company using the phone number that appears in the message.

The message reads: “There is evidence that your PayPal account has been illegally accessed. $600 was deducted from your account for the purchase of a Walmart gift card. This transaction will appear in the automatically deducted amount in PayPal activity after 24 hours. If you suspect that you did not make this transaction, please contact us immediately at the toll-free number.”

The user’s reaction is to make the call, since he considers that the PayPal contact is genuine. Once the customer makes contact with the fake phone number, they are prompted to download a remote administration tool to prevent criminals from gaining access to their account.

However, it is through this contact that the hackers enter the account to perpetrate the theft of the assets deposited there.

Cybersecurity experts warn PayPal users to be aware of any email, not to consider it as genuine, and to access their account exclusively manually.
