Two-thirds of German industry, 64 %, is suffering from material shortages and struggling to meet production, according to a survey by the Ifo economic institute.

In the previous quarter, the number of companies reporting problems had already reached a record high, which has now been far exceeded, Ifo expert Klaus Wohlrabe said. “This could become a threat to growth,” he added.

As explained by the expert, manufacturers are still meeting the demand for their warehouses for the time being, but these are being visibly emptied. “Purchase prices, which have increased a lot in some cases, are also a problem,” he explained.

According to the entity’s survey, 83 % of automobile manufacturers and suppliers and 84 % of electrical equipment manufacturers suffered from shortages of semiconductors and chips.

The sharp rise in the prices of plastic granules was one of the main concerns of manufacturers of rubber and plastic articles (79 %). Among electronic equipment manufacturers, 72 % complained about a shortage of materials, as did 70 % of machinery manufacturers.
