Authorities are intensifying identity verification controls, which are now stricter, and establishing the obligation to report any suspicious transaction exceeding $2,000.

Those involved hope that the controls will not unduly delay sending money to their families, as it is a crucial source of support for their survival in the destination countries.

During 2025, these remittances increased substantially, according to the International Organization for Migration (IOM), with Honduras, Guatemala, and El Salvador among the main recipient countries.

Meta reported that the new age verification tools on Instagram, through an identification document or Video Selfie, came into force this week in several countries around the world.

This way, if a minor profile wants to edit their age to 18 or older, verification will automatically be required to back it up. That’s because, as Instagram’s Director of Public Policy Tara Hopkins said, it’s important to know the age of the profiles using the platform to make sure the experience is “age-appropriate” and that is “a challenge” for the industry.

In the case of choosing verification by means of an identity document, once the age has been verified, the image of the document will be stored “securely” for 30 days. After that, it will be removed, as Instagram has assured in a press release.

On the other hand, in the case of verification through Video Selfie, an age verification technology developed by the company specialized in this field “Yoti” will be used. This technology will estimate the age of the account owner, however, it does not have facial recognition or identification of the person.

That is, it cannot recognize the identity of a user, only the age. Yoti’s technology also doesn’t learn or recognize the person’s name, and once the age is verified, the video will be deleted immediately.

In this sense, Hopkins insisted that “it is a very important step” and has shown his satisfaction in working with Yoti, who “is leading the way in building an effective technology to verify age, while maintaining privacy standards.

WhatsApp is working on a double verification system when you log in with which it seeks to improve the privacy and security of its application in the mobile version, which consists of sending a second numerical code and notification that said account is being used on another device.

Currently, the messaging platform only has a verification system that requires the introduction of an additional six-digit PIN code before registering the account in a new terminal.

However, if a person registers a phone number in a WhatsApp account and manages to obtain the code that is sent to this number to continue with the installation process, the account present in another device is unlinked.

At present, the network is working on a new verification system for mobile devices by sending two codes to avoid cyberattacks, according to specialized media.

The latest WhatsApp beta update for iOS and Android includes a feature that introduces two-step verification. That way, when the first attempt to log into a WhatsApp account is successful, another six-digit code will be required to complete the process.

This second verification code would be sent to the primary device in case someone signs in with the same phone number on a different device. In this way, the victims will be able to know that another person is trying to impersonate their identity and steal their accounts.

This verification includes a notification that “The number is being used by WhatsApp on another phone. To make sure your account is under your control, you need to confirm another verification code.”

Also, this message informs that, to reinforce the security of the users, a timer has been introduced. The user will have to wait for it to finish in order to enter the six-digit code and complete the application installation process.
