This remarkable achievement emerges from the results of IDC’s Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker report.

While it should be noted that IDC warns that its data is preliminary and subject to possible changes, the research agency Canalys also corroborates this milestone by positioning Apple in first place throughout 2023, according to The Verge.

In this context, the Apple company ranks at the top, having marketed a total of 234.6 million phones throughout 2023, experiencing a year-on-year increase of 3.7%. This performance has allowed it to surpass the 226.6 million units sold by Samsung.

Xiaomi, Oppo and Transsion complete the top five sales positions, reaching figures of 145.9 million, 103.1 million and 94.9 million smartphones sold, respectively.

With these revealing figures, Apple now boasts a strong market share of 20.1%, up from 18.8% a year earlier. Meanwhile, the Korean manufacturer has seen its share decrease from 21.7% to 19.4%, according to Bolsa Mania.

This leadership shift represents a monumental achievement for Apple, especially at a time when the company faced demand challenges for its products in early 2024.

For this year, an expenditure of 6,200 million euros (7,160 million dollars) is expected in hardware, software and services in this area. This means that the threshold of € 6 billion will be exceeded for the first time. The figure is 9.7 % higher than the previous record year of 2020 (5.6 billion euros in sales), according to calculations carried out by market research company IDC for Bitkom.

“Cyberattacks have become an existential threat to the economy,” said Susanne Dehmel, a member of the Bitkom Executive Board. For companies and administrations, a high level of IT security is essential for survival and must be an integral part of good management, she added. “The coronavirus crisis has shown how vulnerable many companies are. Spending on cybersecurity will continue to increase in the future.”

Increasing turnover

Half of the funds for increased IT security will go to services. Spending is expected to amount to € 3.1 billion in 2021, an increase of 9.8 %. German companies will invest around 2.3 billion euros in computer security software this year, 11.4 % more than in the previous year. Another 815 million euros will be spent on special devices and hardware (4.9 % more).

For next year, Bitkom forecasts a turnover increase of almost ten percent, to 6.8 billion euros. Growth rates of this magnitude will continue in the coming years. For 2025, the association foresees a turnover of the sector of about 8,900 million euros.

Bitkom called for computer security to be established as a political axis in the new legislature. “The safety of our technologies decisively determines the resilience to crises, the success and the sovereignty of the German economy,” said Dehmel.

The document also highlights the benefits that the business applications sector obtained due to the Covid-19 pandemic, since they were forced to develop and increase all their digital capabilities in order to be “resilient” and respond to their clients needs amidst the adversities of the environment.

According to IDC: “Modular and intelligent applications are helping companies to take advantage of data and obtain information to better maneuver so that they can remain resilient and capitalize on changes in these conditions.”

Various companies are entering the business applications market. However, the study shows that the five most important, together, concentrated 22.8 % of the world market in 2020.

The German company SAP ranked first, achieving 7.5 % of the market and revenues in the order of 15.37 billion euros. In the second place is Salesforce, with 4.7 % of the segment and revenues of 11.120 million. The third place is held by Oracle, which has a 3 % market share with 6.1 billion revenue.

The fourth and fifth places are occupied by the US companies Intuit and Microsoft. Intuit, like Ocracle, has a 3 % market with 6,100 million revenues, while the giant Microsoft only has 2.2 % of the market and about 4,500 million.

The future of apps

The consulting company IDC considers that the business applications market will continue to grow in the coming years with an average of 6.7 % approximately, achieving revenue “close to 284,000 million in 2025”. Imagine that the growth will be gradual and will depend on the specific evaluations that organizations make to “their current portfolios and many of them choose to customize these applications”.

Likewise, the consultancy IDC estimates that the “demand for cloud-based business applications will reach a compound annual growth rate of 13.6 % in the next five years, above the general market.”
