China’s advancement in robotics includes a pioneering project based on the use of UBTech Walker robots for border control and logistics with Vietnam.

According to a report by the International Federation of Robotics, China has long used robots extensively in factories. Last year, they installed nearly 300,000 robots.

Now, the humanoid robots from Shenzhen-based UBTech Robotics have signed a contract to supply their latest models to a testing project that China will conduct near the border with Vietnam.

The deal is part of China’s effort to integrate advanced robotics into public services and border management. The robots will be responsible for “testing the practical applications of humanoids in the real world, such as assisting in border management, guiding travelers, and managing general logistics.”

Amazon, which already uses drones to deliver packages, is reportedly working with the Chinese company Unitree to create an army of humanoid robots to replace human staff in home deliveries.

Several sources have cited Amazon’s work toward the creation of humanoid robots. In fact, they refer to the G1 model, which “measures approximately 1.32 meters and weighs 35 kilos. This robot has an advanced mobility system, thanks to its 23 degrees of freedom that allow it to walk or run, in addition to executing complex movements with precision and stability.”

The development center for these robots would be located at Amazon’s offices in San Francisco, California, where they would also be trained to perform tasks involving various obstacles.

According to the company, “the ultimate goal would be for robots to be able to hop out of the company’s Rivian electric vans and deliver packages directly to the customer’s home.”

Its main motto is “to create generally applicable humanoids that have a positive impact on humanity and generate a better life for future generations.”

According to the firm, its robots are created to “make people live happier and more purposeful lives.”

Figure models are already present in various industry sectors, such as automotive, transportation, logistics, and retail. However, they also perform optimally in household chores, as assistants to the elderly.

At the same time, the company has the ambition of, in the future, contributing to the construction of new environments on other planets.

As Brett Adcock, founder of the company, highlights, its work is aimed “at developing software so that its tools expand their capabilities and perform more complex job functions. Figures will never be used in military, defense applications or in any other function that requires inflicting harm on humans.”

One of Figure’s most recent business partnerships is with German automaker BMW for the use of humanoid robots in the assembly of its vehicles. The abilities of the Figure robots, which measure 1.7 meters tall, will be used in manufacturing processes, especially in those tasks that are more risky for humans, according to Robert Engelhorn, president and CEO of BMW Manufacturing.

“Something like this will probably happen, as long as the foundations of civilization are stable,” commented Musk, in response to Holz’s prediction, who believes that 100 billion robots, “mostly extraterrestrials,” will be throughout the solar system by the 2060s.

Tesla has been working in recent years on a human-like robot, which works with the same artificial intelligence used by its electric vehicles, with the aim that it can not only replace human workers on production lines, but also act as domestic assistants, elderly caregivers and even romantic partners.

In 2022, the billionaire stated that the humanoid robot program could become a priority for his company. Not in vain, he even believes that the robot business could be bigger than that of electric cars.
