The bill obtained 216 votes in favor and 192 against.

The main objective of this law is to prevent the digital dollar from being used as a tool that violates civil rights.

State CBDC Anti-Surveillance Law managed to pass the vote with majority support. In the opinion of some congressmen, “this type of tools could be used by the government as a surveillance mechanism, which could escalate and become a weapon to undermine political dissent.”

Since 2023, the possibility of issuing a CBDC has been discussed in the United States. Regarding the approval of the CBDC State Anti-Surveillance Law, FED President Jerome Powell indicated that “the issuance of a digital dollar would be something that would be done through the banking system, so it would not be something similar to the creation of an account for each resident of the country.”

According to the media report, the US authorities establish as a condition for allowing the use of TikTok in the country that the Chinese parent company ByteDance disassociates itself from the video platform.

On the other hand, “another regulation is proposed that enables the US Government to appropriate Russian assets frozen in the country worth about 6 billion euros.”

The legal issue regarding the video platform has been prolonged, legislators’ discussions continue, and criticism highlights that a definitive ban threatens freedom of expression.

The legislation will be voted on by the Senate this week. Meanwhile, ByteDance is exhausting all legal instruments “before considering any type of divestment if the TikTok ban becomes law.”

Faced with the risk of running out of funds for many departments just after 11:59 p.m. on January 19, the Democratic-led Senate passed this legislation that ensures operations until at least March 1. The House of Representatives must now vote on the same bill and, if passed, it will be sent to President Joe Biden for signature by midnight Friday, thus avoiding technical layoffs for thousands of employees, including air traffic controllers.

The U.S. Congress faces pressure to avoid the notorious partial government “shutdown,” especially considering an impending snowstorm in Washington and the cancellation of votes scheduled for Friday in the House of Representatives.

This funding law will allow the government to continue its state spending until early March, providing time for Congress to agree on a broader budget and spending details. The current situation underscores the recurrent dysfunction of Congress in approving a budget for the fiscal year, which has already been underway for four months, often resorting to temporary measures to avoid a budgetary paralysis.

Negotiations for this bill, voted on Thursday, were marked by tensions between Republicans, a majority in the House, and Democrats, a majority in the Senate. Republican members of the ultra-conservative wing of the House of Representatives are expected to vote against this interim measure, though Democratic support is expected to secure its passage.

The main disagreement between the two parties is over spending allocations.

House Republicans expressed support for a process that could lead to Biden’s impeachment, thus facing the maximum penalty for “high crimes and misdemeanors,” as the Constitution describes it.

This authorization guarantees the extension of the investigation until 2024, coinciding with the possible re-election of Biden and the probable confrontation with former President Donald Trump, who faced two political trials during his term.

In a joint statement after the vote, President Mike Johnson and his team emphasized that they will not prejudge the outcome of the investigation, but underscored the importance of the evidentiary record. The decision to hold the vote was made amid growing pressure to move forward on the nearly year-old investigation focused on the Biden family’s businesses.

Although the investigation has raised ethical questions, so far no conclusive evidence of bribery or corruption on the part of Biden, either in his current position or in his previous role as vice president, has been found.

The House of Representatives approved the measure that seeks to “punish international refineries and ports that work with Iran and therefore violate US sanctions.”

Although the measure must be approved by the United States Senate, for which a date has not been announced, it has the support of members of both parties.

Republican Congressman Mike Lawler and Democrat Jared Moskowitz said in a joint statement about tightening economic sanctions on Iran’s oil, they noted that “the vote “sends a loud and clear message to bad actors like China, Russia and others: no. Help Iran avoid sanctions by helping them finance terrorism, or face the consequences.”

Despite hostilities between the United States and Iran, the latter’s exports have continued, mainly to China. In fact, the Asian country concentrates 80 % of these economic transactions.

According to recent reports, Iran’s crude oil exports, at approximately 1.5 million barrels per day (bpd), reached their highest level in more than four years.

Oil industry analysts have concluded that China has achieved significant savings on imports from countries under sanctions, such as Iran, Venezuela and Russia.

Despite the setbacks he had along the way, the new speaker of the House of Representatives achieved 220 votes compared to 209 for Hakeem Jeffries, the Democratic candidate.

The House remained without direction for three weeks.
Among the immediate challenges that await Johnson is the dilemma over continuing financing to Ukraine, in addition to the expiration of financing to the Government on November 17; if they maintain aid to Israel in the conflict against Hamas, among others.

The motion has been approved with 216 votes in favor to 210 against after Republican representative from Florida Matt Gaetz raised the proposal, accusing McCarthy of acting covertly in the service of the Democratic Party.

Eight Republicans – Andy Biggs, Ken Buck, Tim Burchett, Eli Crane, Matt Gaetz, Bob Good, Nancy Mace and Matt Rosendale – have joined the 208 Democrats who have voted to remove McCarthy, who will be replaced by one of his allies, Republican representative Patrick McHenry, until the election of the new speaker.

The House will now have to elect a new candidate within the framework of a dispute between Democrats and Republicans that has already claimed its first victim after Congress approved a controversial bill to postpone the budget paralysis for another 45 days.

The promoter of the motion of censure, Florida Representative Gaetz, has assured that Republican Majority Leader Steve Scalise in the House would be a “phenomenal” president, although Republican Tom Cole has asserted that “no one knows what will happen,” according to CNN.

McCarthy’s presidency has been marked by instability since its inception, since in January of this year he was elected to office after up to fourteen votes due to the refusal of this tough Republican bloc.

The situation is such that even former President Donald Trump has come forward on social media to criticize his party colleagues and reproached them for being “always fighting among themselves,” although at the moment he has not commented on the impeachment.

During the meeting of the Fifth Commission of the Lower House, the decision was made to approve the Hydrogen Economy in Colombia bill, which was presented by the representative, Nicolás Barguil.

The energy sector is of great importance for Colombia and the entire region. Once the project is law “Hydrogen economy in Colombia will be the foundation to promote the production chain.”

On the other hand, it will allow “potentiating the competitive advantages that the country has, such as lower production costs due to the privileged positioning for its production and its derivatives.”

The bill focuses on four main aspects: reducing the environmental impact caused by fossil fuels, such as oil and coal; strengthening security and energy self-sufficiency in Colombia; promotion of the use of hydrogen for the benefit of food security and sovereignty and protection of water sources.

The United States House of Representatives approved the extension until the beginning of December of the Government’s debt limit, a measure that will now have to be signed by the president Joe Biden, to turn the measure into law, thus preventing the Administration from incurring in possible defaults.

The Lower House gave the green light to the measure, with 219 votes in favor and 206 votes against, after it was approved in the Senate last week after the arrival of an agreement between Democrats and Republicans.

The parties have maintained for weeks their dispute over how to raise the ceiling on the government’s debt, which expected to exhaust its emergency resources on October 18, with the risk of defaulting on its obligations beyond that date.

US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen warned that not raising the country’s debt ceiling would drag the economy into recession.

The approval of the temporary extension by Congress, which raises the “debt ceiling” by 480,000 million dollars, has prevented a catastrophic debt default less than a week from the date set by the Treasury, although it is only a short-term solution and points to another possible fiscal crisis by the end of this year.
