However, the search for affordable options has fueled the consumption of illegal and dubious streaming platforms. In Venezuela, this situation is exacerbated by the sale of smart TVs from unknown brands that include these types of pirated services as part of their product offering.

Although the promise of unlimited content at a low cost is tempting, experts warn that in the digital world, nothing is truly free: when a service doesn’t cost anything, the real prize or product ends up being the user themselves.

Purchasing TVs from unverified manufacturers poses a serious cybersecurity risk. These devices often operate with outdated systems that lack security patches, becoming an entry point for cybercriminals seeking to infect home networks and steal confidential information.

Phishing and artificial intelligence as a lure

In this regard, José Luis Rangel, commercial manager of ESET Venezuela, explains that by using an illegal or unofficial platform, users expose themselves to multiple risks, including phishing.

According to the spokesperson, attackers use fake emails or addresses with images identical to those of the original sites to attract people with special promotions or trending content. These pages serve as bait to direct users to forms that copy the graphics and logos of legitimate sites, often cloned using artificial intelligence.

Data theft and spyware

The problem is compounded when victims inadvertently enter their personal and financial data, such as card numbers, expiration dates, and CVV codes. With this information, cybercriminals build databases to carry out fraudulent transactions.

Furthermore, Rangel warns that these platforms can install spyware on devices to track the user’s daily activity and bombard the device with deceptive advertising.

Social media and mobile payment scams

The ESET representative also points out that these illegal services are commonly promoted on networks such as WhatsApp, Telegram, and TikTok, among others. In many cases, people make mobile payments for access that ends up being blocked by legitimate companies, losing their money while the attacker collects the funds.

To avoid falling victim to these scams, Rangel emphasizes the need to verify URLs before entering data and to check directly on official websites whether an offer is real, reminding everyone that if a promotion seems too good to be true, it most likely is a trap.
