The Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America-People’s Trade Treaty (ALBA-TCP) recently announced that it is working on an upcoming regional peace conference in order to achieve a conflict-free zone and strengthen defense against foreign interference.

According to the bloc’s executive secretary, Rander Peña, this initiative would be aimed at “preserving the principle of Latin America and the Caribbean as a zone of peace, in a context marked by the presence of foreign military forces in the Caribbean Sea.”

After participating in activities held in conjunction with the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, Peña stated that the countries of the region “are holding in-person and virtual meetings with foreign ministers from Latin America and the Caribbean to analyze the regional situation.”

He referred to the current tense situation between Venezuela and the United States, adding: “The ALBA-TCP maintains that no power can impose its vision on peoples who have decided to be free and sovereign.”
