Venezuela signed a five-year memorandum of understanding with India to strengthen cooperation in the health sector and also facilitate the purchase of medicines, as announced in a statement this Tuesday by the Venezuelan Ministry of Health.

According to Venezuelan Minister of Health Nuramy Gutiérrez, the memorandum of understanding “will allow the signing of other agreements that facilitate the arrival of medicines and other health supplies from India, which are not only of very high quality, but have also been released from patents, therefore the international prices end up being very attractive.”

The official also highlighted that the exchange of technical information on drug regulation between the two nations is planned.

The document was signed by the Venezuelan Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, and the Indian Pharmacopoeia Commission. In this regard, the Indian Ambassador to Venezuela, Ashkbarbabu Puluyadikumaran, emphasized that this initiative will give the government of Delcy Rodríguez “the possibility of accessing very high-quality medicines at very low cost, which will also strengthen the relationship between both nations in various areas of health.”

The Sector Vice President for Science, Technology, Ecosocialism, and Health, Gabriela Jiménez, held a meeting with representatives of the pharmaceutical companies Leti, MegaLabs, Elmor, Polinac, and Spefar to discuss the importance of promoting drug production in the country.

The Minister of Health, Magaly Gutiérrez, also participated in the meeting. She commented that topics such as “the prioritization of essential medicines and new therapeutic technologies, as well as the control, quality assurance, and corresponding import permitting of all medicines entering the country” were discussed.

Other topics on the agenda at this meeting included contributions from the scientific community to control vectors that transmit yellow fever, dengue, malaria, and Zika.
