The Venezuelan Ministry of Science and Technology announced the implementation of rigorous regulations to exercise greater control over the manufacture, import, export, distribution, commercialization, use, advertising and promotion of electronic cigarettes throughout the country. As reported by the ministry, the objective of these measures is to reduce the sale and consumption of these devices.

As reported in the Official Gazette number 42,641, the new regulations prohibit the sale of electronic cigarettes to minors and restrict their use in workplaces, closed public spaces and means of transportation.

The Ministry of Science and Technology explained that this regulation seeks to supervise and control public health in relation to the sale, manufacture and commercialization of these products, due to the serious risks they represent for the population.

In addition, the regulation establishes the obligation to provide detailed information about the ingredients of the product and clear warnings about the damage and addiction that they can cause in the packaging of electronic cigarettes. Businesses are also required to comply with specific tax requirements for the manufacture, sale, and distribution of these types of products.

The Ministry of Science and Technology reiterated that these measures are based on the warnings issued by the World Health Organization (WHO) about the global growth of the Electronic Nicotine Administration Systems (SEAN) market.
