Parental controls are part of these advances that help control not only the sites that minors consult, but also help improve the use of the network by establishing navigation schedules, blocking notifications during study hours, among others.

Online supervision and security tools for minors are part of the company’s commitment, according to Priscila Couto, Program Leader, Trust and Security for Google Latin America.

The safety of children and adolescents on the Internet is a priority for Google

(Reference image source: Annie Spratt on Unsplash)

These tools, such as SafeSearch, are, among others, “to promote respect among minors, empower them to explore and learn, and protect them in the digital world.”

Google has launched a new Family Link design, which facilitates supervision and administration by parents regarding the accounts and devices that children and adolescents manage.

Parents or guardians can see a summary of the use by application, manage a browsing time limit, as well as schedule breaks or approve downloads, in addition to blocking websites that they consider suspicious, harmful, or openly containing adult content.

Parent administrators can restrict malicious applications

Google also offers the new function called School Time “that will help children stay focused during school hours. It allows administrators to limit phone use, silence notifications and restrict applications based on different needs.”

On the other hand, with the Be Awesome on the Internet program, the goal is to provide children with tools that allow them to acquire the necessary skills “to preserve their security and act intelligently in the online world.”

The most recent case, after Venezuela, has been the closure of X in Brazil by court order. However, other countries, such as Turkey, China and Uzbekistan had given the same order at another time.

The list of countries where social network X was blocked, so far, includes:

China: The Asian country blocked the social network then called Twitter in June 2009, just two days before the 20th anniversary of the crackdown on pro-democracy demonstrations in Tiananmen Square. Citizens use Weibo and WeChat.

Iran: During the demonstrations for the presidential elections of June 2009, Twitter was banned and remains to this day.

Turkmenistan: The Central Asian country began blocking Twitter in early 2010, as did other foreign services and websites. Internet browsing is monitored by the authorities and is provided exclusively by the state-owned company TurkmenTelecom.

North Korea: Although the country opened its account on the social network in 2010, it proceeded to block it in April 2016, as did Facebook, YouTube, and gambling and pornography websites. Only some government agencies have access to the Internet, and it is under the control of the government system.

Burma: Twitter has been blocked in this country since February 2021, following protests against the military coup that overthrew the civilian government of Aung San Suu Kyi.

Russia: Vladimir Putin’s government blocked Twitter by applying slowdowns from 2021. Moscow argued that the social network disseminated illegal content. It formally removed access in March 2022, as soon as the invasion of Ukraine began. Many Russian citizens continue to use X through VPN services.

Pakistan: Since February 2024, access to X has been banned for security reasons, according to the government.

Venezuela: The ban on social network X was ordered by the government of Nicolás Maduro as of August 9, after the presidential elections of July 28, when the National Electoral Council declared him the winner for a third term.

Brazil: Federal Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes ordered the definitive suspension of X in the country on Friday, August 30, after some accounts whose suspension had been ordered by Brazilian courts were reactivated. The fine for those who enter the platform using VPN would be 50,000 reais (approximately $8,900) per day.

The immediacy of the content that users publish on social networks has caused unfortunate confrontations between populations, particularly due to differences in religion, race or sexual orientation.

“Europe is experiencing an alarming increase in hate speech and hate crimes, and evidence shows that the Jewish and Muslim communities have been particularly affected,” the EC statement said.

According to the organization, the budget allocated for the protection of places of worship will be increased, which includes an increase of 5 million euros (5.4 million dollars) that will allow action against the threats of growing anti-Semitism.

Online hate speech, as well as illegal threats, is another area where the rules will be intensified. To do this, they have “a code of conduct signed with Internet platforms, which will be finalized in the next three months, in addition to the stricter regulation for large online platforms that was introduced earlier this year in the Law of Digital Services.”

This document dates back to 2016, when the platforms Facebook, X (former Twitter), YouTube, as well as Microsoft committed to fighting against the promotion of hate on the Internet. Then TikTok, LinkedIn and Instagram joined.

Elon Musk, the new owner and CEO of the platform, anticipated the work they are doing in line with the new policy. “It is freedom of expression, but not freedom of scope,” he differentiated in a post shared on his personal profile.

For Elon Musk, “freedom of expression is essential for a functioning democracy”

The owner of Tesla explained that negative or hate messages “will be reduced to the maximum and will be demonetized, so there will be no ads or other income for Twitter.”

So it is understood that this type of speech will be allowed, but will lack visibility. “You won’t find the tweet unless you specifically search for it, which is no different from the rest of the internet,” he said.

It is nothing new that Musk is always critical of the way in which this social network allows and encourages freedom of expression, as well as the platform’s moderation tools.

At the beginning of 2022, he launched a survey for his followers, to whom he reminded that “freedom of expression is essential for a functioning democracy” and asked if they considered that Twitter should “rigorously” align with this principle.

New Twitter policy is freedom of speech, but not freedom of reach.

Negative/hate tweets will be max deboosted & demonetized, so no ads or other revenue to Twitter.

You won’t find the tweet unless you specifically seek it out, which is no different from rest of Internet.

Telegram reported that the platform’s policies do not allow content that incites to harm others and in the American context, only last week closed “hundreds of public calls to violence.”

The founder of Telegram, Pavel Durov, said in a publication that the platform “welcomes peaceful debate and protest,” but prohibits “the explicit distribution of public calls to violence,” as stated in the service’s policies.

In recent weeks, with the United States in the background, the company was aware of the activity carried out on its platform, as a result of the increase in complaints made by users about content from the American country.

Durov assures that the Telegram team “acted decisively in suppressing US channels that advocated violence.” Last week, moderators closed “hundreds of public calls to violence that could otherwise have reached tens of thousands of subscribers,” which complement the proactive removal of such content.

In this context, the founder of the application has reaffirmed the position of the platform: “Telegram welcomes political debate from all sides of the political spectrum, but will act quickly to stop those who incite people to inflict harm on others.”
