The Provisional Electoral Council (CEP) of Haiti announced that the first round of the presidential elections in the country will be held on August 30, 2026, and a possible second round would be on December 6.

According to the body that governs the electoral processes, local elections would take place on December 6, when a presidential second round is expected.

The electoral campaign will begin on March 15 and end on August 29 of next year, while the results of the first round will be published on October 3.

Haiti has gone a decade without elections. Therefore, CEP authorities are confident that after the elections they will have new authorities in place starting January 20, 2027.

The newly appointed Prime Minister of Haiti, Garry Conille, expressed this weekend his commitment to the transition process of a nation plunged into a deep sociopolitical crisis.

Between 2011 and 2012 he held the same position under the mandate of Michel Martelly. On Saturday he held a meeting with the interim prime minister, Michel Patrick Boisvert, who takes office after the resignation of Ariel Henry following the acts of violence at the end of February.

The private meeting took place in the ambassadors’ lounge of the air terminal and new work meetings are planned to face the internal crisis, while waiting for Conille to take office.

“Conille committed to working with the Presidential Transition Council to resolve the problems facing the country, where elections have not been held since November 2017 when Jovenel Moise won, assassinated on July 7, 2021 by an armed group in his private residence in Port-au-Prince.”

He accepted the position with humility and willingness to work alongside the councilors and organizations that placed their trust in him.

It is important to note that since 2023, Conille, a doctor, has been regional director of the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) for Latin America and the Caribbean.

The European Union announced this Wednesday that it will allocate 130 million euros for humanitarian aid to confront the migration crisis in several Latin American countries.

The European Commission (EC) will allocate European Union (EU) funds “to address the most urgent humanitarian needs in Latin America and the Caribbean during the year 2024. The initiative responds to the increase in climate crises and conflicts in the region, with special attention to the most vulnerable populations.”

Venezuela will be one of the beneficiary nations. According to the EU, it will receive 50 million euros that will be used to “mitigate the consequences of the prolonged humanitarian crisis that the country is going through and its regional repercussions. In addition, an additional 5 million euros will be allocated to strengthen the country’s preparation for natural disasters.”

On the other hand, Colombia will also benefit from European aid. It will receive 16 million euros that will allow it to face the consequences of armed conflicts and preparation for natural disasters.

The allocation for the rest of South America will be 22 million euros, “mainly to address the forced displacement of the population and the internal crisis in Ecuador.”

In the case of Central America, the funds that the European Union will allocate amount to 18 million euros “to respond to humanitarian crises derived from violence and displacement, in addition to an additional million for preparation for natural disasters.”

The Caribbean region will receive 2 million euros focused on the migration issue, in addition to another million for disaster preparedness. The sum complements the 20 million already released in March for Haiti.

The minister detailed on his account on the social network X: “Earlier this year, we announced that we would welcome, on a humanitarian basis, 15,000 migrants from the Western Hemisphere. We offer a path to economic opportunities to help address forced displacement as an alternative”.

IN this sense, it is confirmed that for the fall of this year, foreigners from Colombia, Venezuela and Haiti who meet the requirements of having family members on Canadian soil or who are already citizens of the country, may be eligible for entry.

“In addition to fulfilling our commitment to host 15,000 migrants, we continue to play an active role in migration and protection issues. We are on track to fulfill our commitment to increase resettlement,” details the official statement.
