Additionally, smaller platforms such as Shezmu, Onyx, BananaGun, Bedrock, and CUT also suffered attacks, with losses ranging from $1.4 to $4.9 million.”

One of the most serious attacks recorded last month was via phishing, and reached $32.4 million “via $spWETH signatures. Although this incident was not included in the official figures reported by PeckShield.”

This group has perpetrated more than 300 high-profile attacks in the last three years, mainly targeting strategic sectors in more than 90 countries.

The primary targets of the ‘Kelvin Security’, according to authorities, include critical infrastructure and government entities. In addition to Spain, its actions have been directed to countries such as the United States, Germany, Italy, Argentina, Chile and Japan.

The group’s tactic is to exploit vulnerabilities in strategic entities to obtain access credentials and extract confidential information. They then sell this data on criminal forums on the dark web, a part of the internet that allows users to hide their identity and location.

The Venezuelan man arrested faces charges of membership in a criminal organization, disclosure of secrets, computer damage and money laundering. He is considered to be the main person responsible for laundering the money obtained from the hacktivist group’s criminal activities, and operated mainly through the exchange of cryptocurrencies.

The investigation began two years ago, following sophisticated cyber-attacks on the computer systems of the municipalities of Getafe and Camas in Spain. Cyber-investigation experts linked the attacks to the ‘Kelvin Security’ group, which operated clandestine cybercrime forums on the dark web.

The group exploited vulnerabilities in websites, software and information storage services to massively extract sensitive data from institutions and entities in strategic sectors around the world. Cyvers Alerts revealed a disturbing incident at CoinEx Exchange. In this event, valuable crypto assets, such as ETH, TRON, MATIC, and others, were mysteriously transferred from CoinEx hot wallets to unknown addresses, sparking serious concerns about a possible cyber attack.

CoinEx’s response was immediate. At 5:38 p.m. on the same day, the exchange team issued an official statement in which it reported that its Risk Control System had identified anomalous withdrawals from several addresses of its “hot wallets”, used to safeguard the platform’s assets. In an immediate action, the team formed a specialized investigation unit to delve deeper into the incident and committed to offering 100 % compensation for any losses arising from this security breach.

Additionally, CoinEx confirmed that its security department had been following the trail of the stolen money, diligently advancing the investigation. At 18:20 on September 12, CoinEx shared the first addresses of the compromised wallets and asked the relevant blockchain entities to collaborate in blocking them.

So far, CoinEx has identified three groups of addresses related to the suspected hackers and has urged project teams and other exchanges to monitor and freeze suspicious addresses.

Users, concerned about the situation, have experienced the temporary suspension of withdrawals at CoinEx. However, the exchange has assured its community that, in the interest of ensuring asset security, withdrawals will resume once the hackers’ addresses are fully identified and isolated after a thorough review. The team stressed that users’ assets are kept “safe and intact.”

This incident highlights the inherent vulnerability of hot wallets compared to cold wallets, which remain offline and are more secure. More than 100,000 ChatGPT accounts have been compromised globally in the last year due to the use of so-called infostealers to infect computers with them and steal access credentials.

The theft of access credentials to ChatGPT accounts puts confidential information at risk, since many employees access this service to automate tasks, and it saves the history of AI requests and responses.

Between June 2022 and May 2023, researchers from the security firm Group-IB have detected 101,143 compromised ChatGPT accounts, whose credentials have been put up for sale on the ‘darkweb’.

This theft of credentials has been carried out with the help of so-called ‘infostealers’, malicious programs that infect a computer to steal information. These would also have been acquired on the ‘darkweb’. Group-IB the most used in this campaign are Racoon, Vidar and Redline.

In May 2023, the highest peak of records with compromised ChatGPT accounts (26,802) was detected, compared to the 74 detected in June of last year. However, this data may respond to the growth in popularity experienced by ChatGPT from November, when it was officially launched.

Analysis by region indicates that Asia-Pacific is the most affected in the analyzed period, with 40,999 devices infected with ‘infostealer’ and saved ChatGPT credentials. They are followed by the Near East and Africa (24,295) and Europe (16,951). By country, the most affected are India (12,632), Pakisbtan (9,217) and Brazil (6,531).

The periodic updating of passwords and the activation of a two-factor authentication system are two barriers that help protect the access credentials to ChatGPT accounts, as pointed out by Group-IB.

SushiSwap, a cryptocurrency decentralized exchange (DEX), fell victim to a cyberattack that resulted in the loss of $3.3 million worth of Ether (ETH) belonging to a user. The attack happened over the weekend and targeted the RouteProcess02 smart contract, which helps aggregate liquidity from various sources and determines the best price for cryptocurrency trading.

Security team PeckShield reported that a user in the crypto community known as Sifu had around 1,800 ETH stolen due to an “approval error” in the SushiSwap smart contract.

According to blockchain security experts, the glitch originated from the platform’s swap() function, which allowed the exploiter to peg and steal users’ tokens without their knowledge. SushiSwap lead developer Jared Gray urged users to revoke permissions for all protocol contracts after confirming the issue. PeckShield also recommended that all users revoke permissions for contracts in the protocol, noting that the exploited contract was deployed across multiple blockchains.

In addition to Sifu, some USDC users may have been affected as well. Although some reports suggest that not many are at risk. The DeFiLlama developer, known as @0xngmi, claimed in a tweet that only those who traded on the DEX in the last four days should be affected. A list of contracts was published on GitHub with all the strings that should be revoked and a tool was shared to check if any of the user addresses were affected.

According to Kevin Peng, a block research analyst, 190 Ethereum addresses approved the problematic contract, while more than 2,000 addresses from Arbitrum, an Ethereum Layer 2 network, apparently approved the flawed contract. Users are encouraged to verify their exposure on other networks, such as Ethereum, Avalange, Gnosis, and Optimism, among others.
