The decision was made despite differences between President Daniel Noboa and his Colombian counterpart, Gustavo Petro, and reflects the Ecuadorian government’s “openness to advancing bilateral cooperation mechanisms on security matters to promote greater coordination between both countries and strengthen development in the border region.”

Tensions between the two nations escalated due to differences over drug trafficking and spilled over into the trade sector last January when Noboa announced that a 30 % security tax on Colombian imports would take effect on February 1st.

Colombia responded with a similar measure, further increasing tensions. Noboa’s announcement has prompted renewed talks aimed at restoring calm between the two governments.

In addition to these agreements, which cover economic, technological, educational, scientific or cultural aspects, Xi has granted Petro to elevate bilateral relations to the level of Strategic Partnership, “a historic fact” in the opinion of the Colombian Presidency, which has released several statements about subsequent meetings.

“Neither mountains nor seas can distance people with common aspirations. The vast Pacific Ocean cannot hinder the deep friendship between the Chinese and Colombian peoples,” emphasized Petro, who appealed during the official dinner to the “diverse and numerous challenges” shared by both nations.

In the field of economic cooperation, the Colombian president has taken advantage of his trip to defend Chinese participation in the construction of the Bogotá metro, marred in recent weeks by suspicions of possible corruption that have called into question the role of the mayor, Claudia López.

For Petro, “it would be foolish” if the Colombian capital were left without its underground transportation network if there is foreign interest in “financing one hundred percent of that project.” In this sense, after meeting with several companies, he highlighted that this external financing could allow Bogotá to allocate resources to social projects.

Likewise, he has clarified that “technically” a line can be developed without “major delays” in two phases – “a first elevated and an underground” – using the studies initially carried out during his time as mayor of Bogotá. “Technically it is possible and legally also; the question is whether politically,” he slipped.

The information was confirmed by the Colombian Foreign Ministry through a statement, which details that the Venezuelan government granted “approval for the appointment of Mr. Milton Rengifo Hernández as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Colombia in the neighboring country.”

Rengifo Hernández worked with Petro during his time as a congressman, as well as during his career as head of the Bogotá Mayor’s Office, where he served as Undersecretary of Environment and Local Affairs.

«With President Petro you can have differences, and criticize him in various facets, but in matters of transparency he is blameless, vertical. I was in his UTL (Legislative Work Unit) 1998-2010 and I saw him, angry, take a lobbyist out of the office who came in to offer money,” Rengifo said through the social network Twitter.

Last Friday, Petro announced the withdrawal of the government’s chief of staff, Laura Sarabia, as well as Armando Benedetti, after both were involved in a scandal of wiretapping and possible abuse of power.

The scandal spread this Sunday night, after Semana magazine published some audios that Benedetti sent to Sarabia, in which he threatened to reveal secrets about the financing of Petro’s presidential campaign.

In response to the scandal, the President of Colombia assured that he did not receive money from drug trafficking during his campaign and that the Colombian government has not done anything illegal.

This was agreed at a meeting held in Madrid, on the occasion of the state visit of the President of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, in which the Ibero-American Secretary General, Andrés Allamand; the Minister of Commerce, Industry and Tourism of Colombia, Germán Umaña; the permanent secretary of CEIB, Narciso Casado and the president of ProColombia, Carmen Caballero.

The Mipyme Forum is a space for public-private dialogue to promote economic recovery and make visible the priorities and challenges that lie ahead for the region. Among the main purposes of this meeting is the debate and reflection on the challenges faced by small and medium-sized companies.

“This sixth edition will undoubtedly be a good instance to think about a productive Ibero-America that interconnects its innovation ecosystems and promotes more and better small and medium-sized companies”, pointed out from the Council of Ibero-American Entrepreneurs (CEIB).

Likewise, the VI Ibero-American Forum of MSMEs will be an opportunity to share good business practices, improve the region’s productivity, provide assistance and training tools: improve access to financing or promote the internationalization process of this type of companies.

During his speech at the Spain-Colombia business meeting, held this Thursday at the CEOE headquarters, the Colombian president pointed out that this close relationship between Spain and the different countries of the Latin American region becomes the “central “of the European Union-Celac Summit, which will take place in July in Brussels.

Said act will be led by Spain, as the country with the rotating Presidency of the Council of the European Union in the second half of the year, which Petro valued as an “opportunity”, since Spain plays an “important and strategic” role with Latin America.

“Spain understands Latin America, knows it and has lived through it. So, there is an opportunity. It is not a relationship of subordination, it is an opportunity to become partners,” said the president of Colombia.
