The case of Jair Bolsonaro, former Brazilian president, is in the spotlight after the Supreme Federal Court found him guilty of attempted coup d’état in 2022, with a sentence of 27 years and three months in prison.

Bolsonaro’s defense could appeal the decision, arguing that the sentence was excessive. Therefore, they are considering appealing to international courts.

Defense attorneys Celso Vilardi and Paulo da Cunha Bueno stated that “the ruling of the First Chamber of the Supreme Federal Court is unacceptable,” adding: “The former president’s defense (…) respects the decision (…). However, it cannot fail to express its profound disagreement and indignation with the terms of the majority decision.”

Bolsonaro is currently under house arrest. The former president’s age and the various surgeries he has undergone would be mitigating factors for the defense to request that he continue under this condition.

On February 7, former French President Nicolas Sarkozy received an electronic ankle bracelet for monitoring by the authorities, after being found guilty in the corruption case.

As will be recalled, the former president of the European nation was accused of “attempting to bribe a judge and influence peddling in exchange for confidential information on an investigation into the finances of his 2007 campaign.”

Sarkozy appeared on January 28 before the Paris court, where the judge finally established the terms under which this measure would be implemented. After this summons, the execution of the decision was set for Friday, February 7.

“At the home of Sarkozy, 70, an electronic monitoring agent who is part of the prison administration team placed the bracelet on the former president’s ankle and configured the device.”

With this sentence, it is established that the former president of France will be authorized to leave his house at certain hours, established during the summons with the judge last week.

The process will extend until next April 10 “in the middle of the process against him for suspicions of Libyan financing in his electoral campaign of 2007.”
