This data confirms that the country’s Gross Domestic Product growth was revised upward for the April-June period, according to the Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA).

The agency stated: “Real GDP was revised upward by 0.3 percentage points relative to the advance estimate, primarily reflecting upward revisions in investment and consumer spending, which were partially offset by a downward revision in government spending and an upward revision in imports,” the BEA explained.

On the other hand, the Dollar Index also showed a slight recovery from the session’s lows following the GDP report.

This slight economic growth occurs in a context that had caused analysts to doubt the nation’s strengths due to the “uncertain global environment and trade tensions that have shaped the recent economic outlook.” However, it has been noted that “consumption and investment remain key drivers of growth in the United States.”

The projection is based on the growth, although uneven, of other sectors, such as “fishing, agriculture, mining and construction, whose progress will stand out in the last quarter of the year.”

The minister has underlined the confidence of the authorities towards the positive performance of the national economy as a whole for 2025 and noted that in 2024 business expectations changed for the better. “Before, the investment rate was negative and this 2024 it would grow 2 %.”

“For next year we think it will increase by more than 5 %, that is, about US$ 50,000 million of private investment,” he said.

Ruth Brand, president of Destatis, noted that this contraction comes after a slight increase of 0.2 % in the previous quarter.

Analysts, including the Federal Bank, point out that despite having avoided recession, Europe’s largest economy has not managed to maintain economic expansion.

In a context marked by the high cost of energy, “the rise in credit costs, weak domestic demand and difficulties in international trade,” the German export industry has not been able to take off and give the country a boost.

However, despite the weakness in sectors such as constriction and lack of labor, the Bundesbank remains confident in a slight expansion until September.

The eurozone thus exceeded the growth rate registered by the United States economy in the second quarter, which between April and June expanded at a rate of 1.6 %, after having grown by 1.5 % in the first quarter of the year, although it was far from the 4.8 % observed in the United Kingdom.

In the European Union as a whole, economic activity rebounded by 1.9 % between April and June, after registering a decline of 0.1% in the first quarter.

Thus, compared to the same quarter of 2020, the euro zone economy rebounded by 13.6 % year-on-year, while the GDP of the EU as a whole grew by 13.2 %.

Among the EU Member States for which data were available for the second quarter of 2021, Portugal (+ 4.9 %) recorded the largest increase in activity compared to the previous quarter, followed by Austria (+4, 3 %) and Latvia (+ 3.7 %), while Cyprus (+ 0.2 %), Lithuania and Bulgaria (+ 0.4 % both) registered the lowest growth.

The figure stops the growth trend registered in the last two quarters, taking into account that in the last quarter of 2020 the German GDP increased by 0.5 % and in the third quarter of the same year the rise was 8.7 %.

The restrictions approved by the German government to stop coronavirus infections have caused difficulties for both the industrial sector and for hotels and commerce, whose associations have a wave of bankruptcies due to the crisis.

The end of the value added tax (VAT) reduction also had an effect in this initial quarter of the year, as consumers advanced their purchases to the second quarter of 2020 with the aim of benefiting from said reduction.

For their part, orders to German industry increased for the tenth consecutive month in February, bringing them closer to the levels prior to the crisis caused by the pandemic. In important foreign markets, such as China and the United States, the demand for “Made in Germany” products also grew.

The German government on Tuesday raised its forecast for growth of gross domestic product to 3.5 % for this year, compared to previous forecasts that placed it at 3.0 %. “This is the year when the turning point will take place,” said German Economy Minister Peter Altmaier. “We will not only halt the downturn in the economy, we will reverse it. We will have regained our old strength by 2022 at the latest,” he added.
