The gas pipeline, whose construction began last Wednesday, July 9, is estimated to offer an initial capacity of 1.5 billion cubic meters per year.

The interconnection with Greece represents “a €60 million project that seeks to end the country’s decades-long dependence on Russian gas.”

The facility will provide access to multiple sources of natural gas, “especially from Azerbaijan and LNG (liquefied natural gas) from the United States through the plant in the Greek port of Alexandroupolis.”

As is known, North Macedonia has received natural gas since 1997 through the only interconnection pipeline with Bulgaria. This infrastructure connects to the Trans-Balkan pipeline “which transports Russian gas via Ukraine and has a capacity of 800 million cubic meters per year.”

This project is expected to provide a stable supply of gas to businesses and reduce prices for citizens.

This week, the president of the European nation, Emmanuel Macron, insisted that the European Union move quickly on a decision on the issue to protect children from sensitive content.

Greece appears to have initiated the proposal, now followed by Spain and France. In the latter, the government already requires certain controls regarding social media use by children under 15.

Macron has called for a swift decision in the region regarding measures such as limiting the time young people spend online and the content they can access, as well as the actions they could take online, such as online purchases, which could even pose a danger to users and third parties.

“The country can now look towards a new clean horizon, one of development, unity and prosperity for all,” said Mitsotakis, in a video that symbolizes the end of twelve years that, as the prime minister has acknowledged, has brought hard commitments.

He has pointed out that there has also been “pain” in these twelve years, the result of a battery of obligations that included “unbearable” taxes and cuts in salaries and public services, as well as the fact that Greece was relegated in Europe, reports the newspaper ‘Kathimerini’.

In this sense, he has admitted that the stagnation of the economy has also added a greater “division” in society, critical of the measures imposed from Brussels. However, he considers that some of these “wounds” have been overcome, such as the increase in violence, institutional weakness or the emergence of the neo-Nazi party Golden Dawn.

The European Commission announced on August 10 that it would not extend the reinforced monitoring of the reforms linked to the bailout, after assessing that Greece has fulfilled most of its commitments and that, by extension, it has reduced the risks for the eurozone as a whole.

During his meeting with the Councilor of State and Minister of Foreign Affairs of China, Wang Yi, Mitsotakis ratified the importance that his country attaches to relations with the Asian giant, also highlighting that thanks to “joint efforts” it has been possible to successfully launch the Piraeus project.

Additionally, the Greek prime minister highlighted the advances of China in the protection of the environment, for which his country could expand cooperation agreements in “green development, scientific and technological innovation, and the joint fight against global challenges such as climate change,” said Mitsotakis.

While the Minister of Foreign Affairs of China was emphatic in highlighting the ties of brotherhood that unites his country with Greece and expressed his desire and commitment to promote the exchange of different economic projects and impact on the development of both countries.

For Wang, promoting the Port of Piraeus to become a world port is of great interest, as well as increasing the “development of the construction of the China-Europe Land-Sea Express Line and expanding cooperation in new areas such as renewable energy.”

Multipolar relations

Another aspect addressed by the representatives of Greece and China was the relationship between the European Union and China. The representative of China pointed out that there were no “geopolitical conflicts of interest” because both countries agree with multipolarization, the predominance of democracy in international relations, as well as respect for authority and the role played by the United Nations in addressing the differences or conflicts that some countries may present at any time.

According to Wang, China and Europe are “not rivals.” “They are partners” and between the two predominates cooperation and mutual respect.

The new body will work in coordination with the European Network and Information Security Agency, located in Greece. The EU thus wants to improve coordination in research and innovation in the field of cybersecurity.

Specifically, the center will serve to promote the security of the Internet and other networks and critical information systems by establishing a center that combines investments in research, technology and industrial development in cybersecurity.

“It will play a key role in helping to secure the digital infrastructure that many of us use every day for our work and leisure, as well as information systems and networks such as health, transportation, banking and financial markets systems,” said the Portuguese Secretary of State for the Presidency, Mariana Vieira da Silva.

Last December, the Romanian capital took over the headquarters of the new body against the candidacy of Brussels. The legislation on the new center will have to be adopted by the European Parliament at second reading before being published in the Official Journal of the EU.

“We want to open to tourism on May 14 with specific rules and updated protocols. Until then, we will gradually lift the restrictions if conditions are favorable”, Theoharis explained.

The Minister of Tourism was at an international event of the tourism industry from the Acropolis museum in which he revealed some details of the plan, such as that tourists will have to undergo a rapid coronavirus detection test and that they will be adjusted to the same level of restrictions than the Greeks.

Along these specifications, Theoharis explained that the health capacities of the tourist destinations will be strengthened to ensure that both tourists and the natives of these locations receive “adequate care.”

The Hellenic country has been one of the partners that have most firmly promoted the creation of a vaccination passport at the European level, given that tourism is a key sector in the country’s economy.
