The new gas pipeline connecting North Macedonia and Greece is expected to be completed in 2027, thus reducing their dependence on Russia in this area.

The gas pipeline, whose construction began last Wednesday, July 9, is estimated to offer an initial capacity of 1.5 billion cubic meters per year.

The interconnection with Greece represents “a €60 million project that seeks to end the country’s decades-long dependence on Russian gas.”

The facility will provide access to multiple sources of natural gas, “especially from Azerbaijan and LNG (liquefied natural gas) from the United States through the plant in the Greek port of Alexandroupolis.”

As is known, North Macedonia has received natural gas since 1997 through the only interconnection pipeline with Bulgaria. This infrastructure connects to the Trans-Balkan pipeline “which transports Russian gas via Ukraine and has a capacity of 800 million cubic meters per year.”

This project is expected to provide a stable supply of gas to businesses and reduce prices for citizens.
