Google has updated its Meet service to consume less of a computer’s resources by using its graphics processing unit (GPU) instead of the central processing unit (CPU).

The Mountain View company has highlighted the growing relevance of video conferencing in recent years in a statement posted on its Artificial Intelligence (AI) blog.

As a result, Google has included new features in its Meet service, such as implementing cloud rendering to improve background effects and reduce device power consumption during video calls.

These effects are made possible by machine learning models that Google Meet runs directly from the user’s browser without the need to install additional software.

Until now, the CPU of a computer has been in charge of processing these Google machine learning models. With the latest Meet update, the GPU will be the one to perform this task.

Google Meet update promises greater efficiency

To do this, the company has implemented in this update a new segmentation model based on high-resolution (HD) input images, instead of low-resolution images, as before. A change that allows you to double the resolution compared to the previous model, according to Google.

However, their calculations indicate that doubling the resolution of the input quadruples the computational cost. A toll that the CPU of many devices cannot pay as it is limited by the HD segmentation that it must execute in parallel.

Given this context, Google Meet will begin to rely on the GPU of mid-range and high-end equipment, which integrates more powerful components. The technology company believes that the low-performance cores contained in this unit are ideal for processing high-resolution convulsive models, which in turn will reduce the use of computer resources.
