As a new advance in this area, Google implemented on January 20 “a verification badge system for VPN applications. It is similar to verified accounts on social networks such as Instagram or X.”

This verification is activated before the user downloads a free VPN app. “Check that it has the verified badge, as that will be the seal that confirms that the application has passed Google’s security tests.”

Additionally, the Google Play Store began to show “warnings on the detail pages of applications that are considered to be of low quality or that present frequent problems, such as constant crashes or failures.”

The five applications that experts on the subject recommend uninstalling as soon as possible are: AirFS – File sharing via Wi-Fi (30,305 downloads), Astro Explorer (718 downloads), Amber for Genshin (19 downloads), CryptoPulsing (790 downloads) and Brain Matrix (259 downloads).

Regarding the progress of Mandrake spyware, it has been indicated that it has been rapid. Cybercriminals have “improved their methods of concealment, evasion of isolated environments and circumventing new defense mechanisms.”

Today, threats are more sophisticated and difficult to detect, so customer vulnerability increases exponentially. Furthermore, if they sneak into the official application download channels, the risk is greater.

China gave access to the digital yuan to tourists and other visitors to its territory by downloading the e-CNY application available in the Apple App Store and the Google Play Store.

Foreigners do not need to have a passport or a bank account in the Asian country to use the Chinese digital currency in various transactions.

The announcement was made this Monday, when the Central Bank of China “published a user guide to the digital yuan, also known as e-CNY.”

The move seeks to expand the reach of the nation’s CBDC by inviting visitors to download the e-CNY app.

Once the download is complete, “people must register to create an account. According to the instructions, foreign visitors should select the authorized operator that supports international services with e-CNY.”

At the moment, they have four operators authorized by the Central Bank, which are the Bank of China, the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China, the China Construction Bank and the Bank of Communications of China.

By registering in the app, foreigners have the opportunity to open an e-CNY wallet “using phone numbers from about 210 countries and regions. It also adds the possibility of opening a wallet without having to have an account with one of the authorized operators.”

As explained by the Central Bank, transactions for up to 2,000 yuan are authorized, and they have a daily limit of 5,000 yuan.

The Google Play Store in India recently excluded apps from cryptocurrency exchanges Binance and OKX. The move followed a notice of non-compliance issued by the Indian government, marking a stricter regulatory trend in the country towards cryptocurrencies.

On December 28, 2023, the Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) of the Indian Ministry of Finance notified several cryptocurrency exchanges, including Binance, Huobi and Kraken, for illegal transactions in the country. This notice required any exchange serving Indian users to register as a “reporting entity” and file returns with the tax department.

In response to this breach, the FIU proposed to the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology to block the websites of the affected exchanges. Meanwhile, the Google Play store blocked Binance and OKX, although Binance’s operations remain available through its app and website to existing users.

Binance South Asia, via a post on X (formerly known as Twitter), confirmed its knowledge of the ban in India, assuring users the security of their accounts and funds.

This situation intensified after India implemented a 30% tax on cryptocurrencies, as well as a 1% withholding tax deduction for each cryptocurrency transaction, causing a decrease in the volume of transactions on local exchanges and an exodus of users to international platforms.

India’s Finance Bill, passed in March 2022, brought significant changes to the tax regulations for cryptocurrencies, including a 30% tax on the holding and transfer of cryptocurrencies. These regulations, considered strict by many, have transformed the cryptocurrency landscape in India, affecting both local and international exchanges.

A coalition of 37 attorneys general in the United States filed a lawsuit against Google in California for alleged monopolistic conduct in relation to its application Google Play Store.

The lawsuit is led by the Utah attorney general. It has been joined by the attorneys general from 35 other states in the country, in addition to Washington DC.

“Google’s monopoly is a threat to the market. Google Play is not fair. Google must be prosecuted for harming small businesses and consumers. It must stop using its monopoly power and hyper-dominant market position to capture billions of dollars of SMEs, competitors and consumers above what they should pay,” said Utah Attorney General Sean Reyes.

This new lawsuit accuses Google of having used its dominant position to unfairly restrict competition with the Google Play Store. The complaint argues that the technology company originally sold Android as an “open” system, causing manufacturers to use it and not compete with Google Play at that time. According to the lawsuit, once the company had a “critical mass” of users, it began shutting down the Android ecosystem.

Specifically, the attorneys general accuse the giant of imposing technical barriers that prevent users from installing applications outside the Play Store. They also ensure that the company forces device manufacturers to sign agreements to prevent them from developing versions of Android that deviate from the version certified by Google.
