Samsung Messages will cease operations in the United States, redirecting users to Google Messages as part of its integration with the Android system.

According to 9to5Google, “the change represents a further adjustment in the South Korean company’s software strategy, which has long been giving greater visibility to Google’s messaging app on its phones.”

Messaging is important to consumers, so this change by Samsung will not go unnoticed. “For the past few years, Google has promoted Google Messages as its primary option for SMS, MMS, and RCS. Samsung, meanwhile, long maintained its own pre-installed messaging app, even as it expanded its collaboration with Google in other key areas of the operating system.”

The announcement implies the closure of Samsung’s own messaging solution “in parallel with Google’s offering.” As a result, users will migrate to a single reference app, which could simplify the experience. According to 9to5Google, the change “is not happening in a vacuum. Google has worked intensively to position RCS as the modern successor to SMS, with features such as typing indicators, higher-quality image sharing, and more comprehensive group chats. Google Messages has been the central conduit for bringing that offering to Android users.”

For Samsung, the change indicates a focus on interoperability with Google’s app. It also “shows how control of the underlying software remains crucial for technological competitiveness, even in everyday tools like a messaging app.”

The app seeks to strengthen user protection by warning users that the content is sensitive, either in received messages or when attempting to send them. “In the first case, it will blur the content and allow users to delete the image without ever seeing it.” In the second case, if you want to send an image containing nudity, “the app will warn users of the risks involved and ask them to confirm their decision.”

According to Google, detection of this type of content is run directly on the device and is not shared with anyone. “At the moment, it only works on images, with no support for videos.”

To use this feature, the app must be linked to a signed-in Google account. It is disabled by default for adult users, while it is enabled for underage users, although parents can manage it.
