Google Workspace has added new filters and 3D effects to the Meet video calling app to bring a fun element to meetings.

A strawberry, a log or a rabbit working are three of the new 3D filters that Google has added to Meet this Wednesday, both in the web version and in the mobile version, where they can be added to video calls before they start or during their developing.

The company has begun the deployment of this novelty this Wednesday, which will appear activated by default for all users of Workspace except for those of the educational version.

Google has noted on the Workspace blog that these filters and effects “can help bring an element of fun to meetings.”

Google has updated its Meet service to consume less of a computer’s resources by using its graphics processing unit (GPU) instead of the central processing unit (CPU).

The Mountain View company has highlighted the growing relevance of video conferencing in recent years in a statement posted on its Artificial Intelligence (AI) blog.

As a result, Google has included new features in its Meet service, such as implementing cloud rendering to improve background effects and reduce device power consumption during video calls.

These effects are made possible by machine learning models that Google Meet runs directly from the user’s browser without the need to install additional software.

Until now, the CPU of a computer has been in charge of processing these Google machine learning models. With the latest Meet update, the GPU will be the one to perform this task.

Google Meet update promises greater efficiency

To do this, the company has implemented in this update a new segmentation model based on high-resolution (HD) input images, instead of low-resolution images, as before. A change that allows you to double the resolution compared to the previous model, according to Google.

However, their calculations indicate that doubling the resolution of the input quadruples the computational cost. A toll that the CPU of many devices cannot pay as it is limited by the HD segmentation that it must execute in parallel.

Given this context, Google Meet will begin to rely on the GPU of mid-range and high-end equipment, which integrates more powerful components. The technology company believes that the low-performance cores contained in this unit are ideal for processing high-resolution convulsive models, which in turn will reduce the use of computer resources.

Google updated its environment of professional applications in its workspace with new functionalities, incorporating the “possibility of making voice and video calls directly from the Gmail app through integration with Meet video calls .”

The telecommunications company informed, through a statement, about the new functionalities in Google Workspace, with which it intends to optimize the hybrid work that is being carried out in organizations due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

These updates include the integration of the Google Meet video call service directly from the chat. Users, from their Gmail app, will be able to make video or voice calls without having to leave the application.

When initiating a call, the receiving device will emit a sound, like that of conventional calls, and it will be possible to respond from different equipment such as laptops, with a call notification in the chat. Another added improvement was the option to configure the calendar, which will automatically indicate whether the user will attend meetings in person or remotely.

New spaces

Next November, the technology giant plans to launch the new “companion mode” of Google Meet, which will increase productivity from meeting rooms because it will be able to “show presentations, access the chat and the whiteboard, initiate surveys, ask questions or translate the meeting automatically.”

Other novelties, from the extensive range of updates, are the “Worskpace Spaces”, defined as a collaborative place between users for specific topics, they are already integrated into the tools “Calendar, Drive, Meet, Tasks, Documents, Spreadsheets and Presentations and seek to replace chain mail and group calls as a method of organizing work teams.”

Google also announced the launch of “two new specialized devices for videoconferencing: Google One Desk 27, 27 inches, and Series One Board 65, with a 65-inch 4K screen.”
