According to the regulatory body, “Venezuela has accumulated twelve months with double-digit inflation rates, with January’s being the highest in that period, as well as the highest in exactly three years.”

One of the main causes for the price increase is the rise in the dollar exchange rate. “The price of the dollar on the official market went from 301.37 to 473.87 bolivars in the first quarter of the year, an increase of 57.2 %, which also represents a 36.4 % devaluation of the Venezuelan currency, the bolivar, against the US dollar.”

On the other hand, the monthly minimum wage has been 130 bolivars since March 2022, and it faces constant erosion due to inflation and devaluation.

The inflation rate slowed by half a percentage point compared to the 2.2 % rise in prices for the month of August.

According to data from the community statistical office, the value had initially been calculated at 1.8 %. On the other hand, “for the European Union as a whole, the inflation rate reading for the month of September shows a drop of three tenths, to 2.1 %”.

This slowdown in inflation in the eurozone in September reflects the 6.1 % drop in the cost of energy, which fell 3 % year-on-year in August, while fresh food prices rose by 1.6 %.

Also, “the price of non-energy industrial goods rose 0.4 % year-on-year in September, unchanged from the increase in August”.

The countries where the greatest increase in the cost of living was seen are Romania (4.8 %), Belgium (4.3 %) and Poland (4.2 %). On the contrary, the nations with the lowest price increases with an impact on the cost of living are Ireland (0 %), Lithuania (0.4 %) and Slovenia (0.7 %).

In this way, the Venezuelan price index reaches the lowest interannual figure of the year, already accumulating a consecutive fall of three months, after an increase last July that put an end to the downward trend since the beginning of the year.

All in all, it is still a figure that reflects a hyperinflation scenario and that contrasts enormously with the rest of the countries in the Latin American and Caribbean region (except Argentina, where inflation is also above three digits).

According to the information released this Monday by the Venezuelan Observatory of Finance (OVF), an independent economic information organization, this 6.7 % monthly price increase occurred in a context in which the exchange rate remained relatively stable.

This fact denotes that the policy of trying to contain the exchange rate so that it acts as an anchor for inflation does not seem to be giving the expected results, by depriving the economy of inflationary expectations.

Among the items that experienced the greatest increases, services stand out, with an increase of 9.8 %, mainly due to the 17 % increase in the mobile telephony division. For its part, the restaurants and hotels category registered an increase of 9.5 %, and education of 8.3 %. Food prices also showed a significant increase of 7.1 %.

According to the local entity’s report, the increase in prices during the month of August had a substantial rebound that has affected the inflation index.

The data published by the BCV indicate that the sectors with the greatest increase in September 2023 are “education, with an increase of 18.1 %; followed by transportation, with 11.1 %; clothing and footwear, with 10.1 %; and communications, with an increase of 9.8 %.”

Likewise, other items that also showed price increases are food and non-alcoholic beverages, with an average increase of 7.9 % in September, followed by the health sector, where prices reflected an increase of 8.8 %.

Estimates from the Venezuelan Observatory of Finance (OVF), “the estimated monthly inflation for September 2023 was 6 % and the annualized inflation was 396 %.”

The first is directly related “to the 5.5 % increase in the price of the dollar, which reinforces the close link between exchange rate and price movements,” as explained by the OVF.

All this in a bimonetary scenario, where transactions in bolivars, the depreciated national currency, and dollars coexist. The US currency serves as a reference in the price and value market.

Lossada explained that in the first quarter there was a 15 % drop in sales, although positive figures have been recorded in recent months.

“In the first quarter there was a drop in sales from 15 % to 20 % (…) this second quarter we have data for a drop of 5 %. However, for the second half of the year we have a 20 % recovery perspective in terms of sales,” he said.

The representative of the commercial sector estimates that the recovery of wages in the private sector could boost sales for the second half of the year.

According to the president of the federation, this increase is due to a recovery in the salaries of some private companies in the country, where he estimates that the minimum wage has risen to approximately 200 dollars.

Lossada recognized the great challenges that merchants must face due to the high costs of public services in the country, especially in Caracas, where the water service went from $20 to $80 on average during 2023.
