According to the Global Economy report published at the beginning of 2023, carried out by the leading firm in the area of investment banking, and called “The road to 2075: size and opportunities of the capital market”, South America is a region of great potential, and Brazil (Colombia, Argentina and Peru are not overlooked) would occupy eighth place in the top ten along with the United States.

Brazil would occupy eighth place in the ranking of world powers by 2050 and 2075 (Reference image: Raphael Nogueira on Unsplash)

“The empire of a nation as an emerging market is consolidated from the purchasing power capitalized in the privatization of corporate assets,” the report states. In this sense, there is a South American nation that is currently positioned as a potential world power on a list of 104 countries until the year 2050 and also 2075.

Goldman Sachs concluded that “the power of the planet will be in the hands of 3 recognized giants in terms of the nominal Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of each one, while Brazil stands within the Top 10 along with the United States as the state of the subregion. which will grow considerably with a total of $8.7 billion.”

It shows that the country will be ranked eighth on the list and will also maintain that same position 25 years later. It will maintain its leadership “for 2050, 2050 and 2075, along with others that would be added as pleasant surprises as an emerging market.”

Brazil among the main economic powers in the world towards 2050 and 2075

The Goldman Sachs study prepared on June 8, 2023, includes data on countries that “universally would be world powers in the next almost 30 years, taking into account various factors such as potential GDP growth.”

Above Brazil, China would be in first place by both 2050 and 2075. The remaining eight nations would be:

Top Ten towards 2050

1- China

2- United States

3- India

4- Indonesia

5- Germany

6- Japan

7- United Kingdom

8- Brazil

9- France

10- Russia

Top Ten around 2075

1- China

2- India

3- United States

4- Indonesia

5- Nigeria

6- Pakistan

7- Egypt

8- Brazil

9- Germany

10- United Kingdom

The top five will be the world’s largest economies in 2050 as they “combine our GDP estimates with our long-term real exchange rate projections to project the real value of the US dollar for major economies over time.”

Among the criteria considered by Goldman Sachs for a nation like those listed above are “political leadership, economic growth, military strength, alliances with other nations and global influence that includes the ability to exercise authority and dominance over the rest of the territories.”

Given that the projections of the leading firm in the investment banking sector are long-term, which may raise doubts, it is appropriate to highlight that this is, as the firm indicates, an analytical work that “inevitably involves a considerable degree of risk and uncertainty”, where one of the advantages offered “is related to cyclical risk which, as an important source of short-term forecast errors, tends to reverse over time.”

Basel III represents an internationally agreed package of measures developed by the Basel Committee on Banking Supervision in response to the 2007-2009 financial crisis. The aim is to strengthen regulation, supervision and risk management in the banking sector.

Although the adaptation of Basel III to the US financial sector is still pending, several executives of major banks expressed concern in the Senate about the Federal Reserve’s proposal, which imposes stricter capital requirements.

Jamie Dimon, Chairman and CEO of JPMorgan Chase, warned that the proposal could “unjustified and unnecessary” increase the capital requirements of large U.S. banks by a range of 20 % to 25 %. Dimon noted that this would limit the ability of financial institutions to deploy capital at critical times, having a detrimental effect on the global economy, markets and businesses.

David Solomon, chief executive of Goldman Sachs, went even further by stating that the US proposal contradicts the essence of the Basel III Endgame rules, which are designed to set international capital standards without increasing the total amount. According to Solomon, the US proposal is “significantly stricter than any other jurisdiction” and would increase capital requirements by about 25 %.

Solomon cited statements by the Chairman of the Federal Reserve, Jerome Powell, and the Chairman of the Supervisory Board of the European Central Bank, Andrea Enria, to back up his arguments, noting that with the US rules, the requirements would be considerably higher for Europe’s systematically the largest banks, known as “G-SIBs.”

The executive also stressed that adopting this new regulation would result in an increase in credit costs for individuals and companies, exerting a negative impact on the country’s economy.

The news, which was announced on September 19 via CNBC, shook the financial world.

Initially scheduled for release in 2022, the app was hit by growing economic difficulties last year. Rising interest rates and inflationary tensions scared investors away from risky assets, leading to the suspension of the project.

Sources close to the project revealed that the infrastructure was mostly built and ready for launch, in case Apple decides to return to its original plan in the future. It is not yet clear whether the app would have included cryptocurrency futures trading.

The collaboration between Apple and Goldman Sachs to diversify financial offerings to customers in the United States began with the launch of a credit card in 2019. Apple later introduced a “buy now, pay later” feature, allowing users to split your purchases in four equal payments without interest.

In April, the company introduced a savings account backed by Goldman Sachs, offering an attractive 4.15 % annual yield. According to recent reports, user deposits in this savings account exceeded 10 billion dollars. The partnership was not without challenges, however, as Goldman Sachs faced financial difficulties in managing Apple’s credit card, with a high average customer acquisition cost of $350.

Cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase recently revealed that it secured special bitcoin-backed funding from Goldman Sachs.

The objective of this transaction was generated to strengthen the ties between the world of digital assets and traditional finance companies.

Coinbase Institutional head, Brett Tejpaul, noted that the exchange’s work with “Goldman is a first step in recognizing cryptocurrencies as collateral that deepens the bridge between the fiat and crypto economies.”

For now, the total amount of the transaction is not known. However, according to sources, it is presumed that the figure would be valued at approximately 4 bitcoins. That is, about 170 million dollars.

Although loans backed by bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies are common in the crypto industry, especially in decentralized finance (DeFi) protocols, they are rare in traditional finance, where cryptocurrencies are considered too risky and volatile as collateral.

The information was provided by CoinDesK: “The company executed its first OTC cryptocurrency transaction from a bank in the US, produced in collaboration with the trading unit of the crypto investment management firm owned by Michael Novogratz.”

In the crypto world, an OTC trade refers to the process of trading securities through an independent network of brokers. The OTC tool may comprise investment instruments that may or may not be listed on a stock exchange and are held privately. Different investors use them as a means of hedging or to amplify their returns.

Damien Vanderwilt, Co-President and Head of Global Markets at Galaxy Digital, said: “We are pleased to strengthen our relationship with Goldman Sachs and hope that this transaction will open the door for other banks to consider the OTC market as an avenue for cryptocurrency trading.”

From the perspective of Galaxy Digital, OTC operations manifest the adoption and maturation of cryptocurrencies in the financial sector, specifically in the case of Goldman Sachs, it means an expansion of its strategy around this asset class.

Entering the crypto market

The tool known as fututo has been increasing in the world of cryptocurrencies because it allows greater performance and predictability in volatile markets such as the crypto ecosystem.

As will be recalled, Goldman Sachs in the middle of last year also established an alliance with Galaxy Digital to obtain quotes on BTC futures purchase orders through the CME exchange.

Since then, the financial group has been providing liquidity for block transactions in CME Group. By 2021, the bank will also reopen its cryptocurrency trading desk, which had closed in 2018, due to growing demand from multiple institutional clients.

The financial institution spread the news through an official statement stating: “Goldman Sachs is closing its business in Russia in compliance with regulatory and licensing requirements.”

Likewise, they maintain that they will continue to support their clients around the world in the “management or closing of pre-existing obligations in the market and guarantee the well-being of our people.”

After the decision, Goldman Sachs shares fell 2.43 % on Wall Street by mid-morning, on a bad day for the financial sector.

Russia with little impact on the business

Goldman Sachs Groups Inc has been present in Russia in recent years, but according to information provided by the entity “the country does not represent a significant part of its global banking business“, some 650 million dollars in credit risk by 2021.

Goldman’s exit is more symbolic as it is the first financial institution to suspend its operations as a result of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, which could induce a cascade of similar movements to other entities, as has happened with companies in other sectors.

Other US banks also have little presence in Russia. One of them is Citigroup, which has 3,000 employees at its Russian offices and had $9.8 billion in loans, assets and venture capital by the end of 2021.

The investment group even foresees that consumption will continue to rise over the next ten years, if one considers the dynamics of the infrastructure construction sector worldwide.

Goldman Sachs considers this trend positive for the world economy, where, as they have stated, “there was already a record demand” before the appearance of the omicron variant of the Covid-19 pandemic.

“Increased demand for airplanes is being added and the global economy continues to grow,” said Damien Courvalin, head of energy research at Goldman Sachs. “They will see how we will average a new demand record in 2022, and again, in 2023,” he stressed.

The financial institution has also spoken out about the price of oil barrel of oil, and has indicated that by 2022 it could be located at 85 dollars per barrel “with a risk margin that prices will rise between 5 and 10 dollars.”

Given that oil demand will continue to grow until the end of the current decade, Goldman Sachs foresees a progressive energy transition, to reach some 106 million barrels per day.

This was highlighted in the research carried out by the Blockdata consultant, which reflects that “55 of the 100 main fundamental banks have investment participation in blockchain technology companies, crypto initiatives or specific projects through subsidiary companies.”

This trend has been increasing in the market of the cryptocurrencies for months, so financial companies are more focused on developing projects and initiatives related to crypto assets in order to provide better and innovative services to their customers.

The study also emphasizes that the custody service occupies 25 % of participation in the 100 larger banks. “Financing in startups blockchain has grown considerably, to double the levels reached in 2020″, stresses the Blokdata document.

The growth of the demand of users to invest in cryptocurrencies, the income that new companies in the sector have reported, as well as the regulatory and legal measures that States and Governments are taking with respect to the crypto coins are determining factors for the traditional financial sector to participate in this new market.

Apple announced a carbon removal initiative, called “Restore Fund”, through which it will invest in forestry projects to remove carbon from the atmosphere together with Conservation International and Goldman Sachs, for 200 million dollars.

“Nature provides some of the best tools to remove carbon from the atmosphere. Forests or wetlands extract carbon from the atmosphere and store it permanently in their soils, roots and branches”, says Lisa Jackson, Vice President of Environment, Policy and Apple Social Initiatives.

This effort is part of the company’s broader goal of being carbon neutral throughout its value chain by 2030. While the company intends to directly eliminate 75 % of emissions from its supply chain and products by this date , the Fund will help offset the remaining 25 % of the Cupertino company’s emissions.

To ensure that carbon stored in forests is accurately quantified and permanently locked out of the atmosphere, the Restoration Fund will use robust international standards developed by recognized organizations such as Verra, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, and the United Nations Convention on Climate Change. the weather. Likewise, investments in exploited forests that improve biodiversity through the creation of buffer zones and nature reserves will be prioritized.

“Investing in nature can remove carbon much more effectively, and much earlier, than any other technology today. As the world grapples with the global threat posed by climate change, we need new innovative approaches that can dramatically reduce emissions “, defends Dr. M. Sanjayan, CEO of Conservation International.

These efforts are in addition to other announcements by the US company, which a few weeks ago announced that more than a hundred suppliers around the world will switch to using renewable energy as part of the commitment made in 2020 to be carbon neutral by 2030.

One of the main investment institutions, Goldman Sachs, had its trading desk for cryptocurrencies again on March 1st.

According to a source directly related to the institution, the bank is working with bitcoin futures and non-deliverable forwards for its client catalog.

This option reopens just a month after Goldman Sachs CEO Loyd Blankfein was skeptical of bitcoin.

Bitcoin futures are contracts where the two parties agree to buy or sell bitcoins in the future at a pre-established price, while non-deliverable forwards refer to contracts for the purchase and sale of bitcoins settled in cash, where they have a expiration date and a predefined price.

In addition to the trading desk, Goldman Sachs is working on other projects related to the crypto-assets sector, which include blockchain technology and digital currencies from the American central bank.
