The president of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, activated the sixth transformation called Ecosocialism, Science, and Technology, which is part of the 7T plan of the 2025-2031 Government Plan. The Venezuelan Institute for Scientific Research (IVIC) project for the protection of coral reefs is part of this plan.

The project seeks to establish strategies for reef conservation in the face of high temperatures caused by climate change and prevent their disintegration.

“The central point of this transformation is to unite science, technology, and innovation to seek practical and effective solutions to curb the effects of climate change, build a sustainable model in Venezuela, and support the Bolivarian Ecosocialism agenda,” the president stated.

Maduro highlighted the work of IVIC researchers in support of marine diversity in Venezuela. The project is called “Designs of artificial substrates to contribute to the resilience of coral reefs” and is led by Dr. María Cristina Goite, a researcher at the Transition Metal Chemistry Laboratory.

The scientist indicated that “this project, carried out jointly with ecologists from the Coastal Marine Laboratory of the Central University of Venezuela (UCV) and the Institute of Experimental Biology (IBE), was born partly from a desire, through chemistry and ecology, to offer solutions that could contribute to the restoration of our seabed.”

She highlighted the diversity of reefs, as well as their fragility in the face of various threats whose consequences extend to human life. In this regard, she said that the IVIC project hopes to “combine the chemistry of cement and concrete with ecological and biological strategies to facilitate the settlement of the larvae produced by these organisms.”
