Gold is a safe haven asset that is experiencing an upward trend globally, despite the drop in demand in the jewelry industry due to high prices.

“Experts agree that the precious metal remains a safe haven, especially in times of political or financial instability. The combination of Trump’s escalating trade war, a cautious US Federal Reserve, and uncertain global growth has maintained strong demand for gold from both institutional and retail investors.”

Added to this are the gold reserves held by central banks worldwide to reduce their reliance on the dollar, “a trend that supports the long-term momentum of the gold price.”

Figures from the World Gold Council indicate that central banks around the world “have purchased more than 700 tons of gold in the last 12 months,” clearly demonstrating institutional confidence in the long-term value of the precious metal, particularly in countries like China, India, Turkey, and Russia. This trend is also observed in other nations, such as Poland, Switzerland, and Germany.

According to writer Álvaro D. María, author of “The Philosophy of Bitcoin” and CEO of BTC Consulting 360, 2025 is shaping up to be strong thanks to the impact of the digital currency on the global economy.

The writer projects that the price of BTC will maintain an upward trend thanks to the favorable stance towards its adoption by more countries. “This greater institutional and governmental acceptance could pave the way for greater integration of bitcoin into the global economy,” said D. María.

Another favorable factor for the main cryptocurrency in the ecosystem would be the impact of the Lightning Network this year. This second-layer network built on bitcoin can “significantly improve the scalability of the network and reduce transaction fees,” although its impact on the mass adoption of BTC could be limited.

The use of this asset as a financial refuge in the face of global uncertainty and inflation will continue in 2025, as it is considered a good alternative to the devaluation of fiat currencies.

On the other hand, the CEO of BTC Consulting 360 highlights the role of bitcoin ETFs, indicating that these exchange-traded funds have been crucial in “democratizing access to the mother cryptocurrency,” as it is called, as they allow traditional investors “to gain exposure to bitcoin through more conventional investment vehicles, ETFs have attracted large capital flows to this asset.”

Mergers and acquisitions (M&A) activity faltered this year, registering a total of 2,854 transactions to November, which represents a decrease of 14.47% compared to the same period of 2022, with an amount of 67,009 million dollars, indicating a decrease of 26.04%, according to data provided by the specialized transaction tracking platform, TTR Data.

The institutional spokesperson of TTR Data, Marcela Chacón, commented in an interview with Bloomberg Línea that “so far as 2023, it is clear that the global M&A market has adopted a cautious and selective stance in its investments. Despite these challenges, investors are still optimistic about the investment landscape in Latin America.”

Despite the current social and political challenges, the director of Mergers and Acquisitions at the law firm Gómez-Pinzón, Lina Uribe, said that “investors have shown cunning in adapting to the new circumstances.”

Jaime Trujillo, partner in Mergers and Acquisitions at the international law firm Baker McKenzie, told Bloomberg Línea that although 2023 was a year marked by a decrease in mergers and acquisitions activity, relevant transactions were carried out, such as those involving the companies of GEA (Nutresa, Sura and Argos), Almacenes Éxito and Genfar in Colombia.

Trujillo stressed that in 2024, the completion of the acquisition of Nutresa by the Gilinski Group, as well as potential transactions related to GEA companies, should be closely monitored. He also noted that the exploration of alliances and other measures by Grupo Sura and Grupo Argos aroused the interest of many investors.

For next year, Brazil, Mexico and Argentina are expected to boost M&A activity in the region, while Colombia could experience the effects of investments from the same region, especially Brazil.

Jaime Trujillo stressed that “big investors did not have Latin America among their priorities” due to factors such as the fragility of the economic recovery, populist policies and the uncertainty generated by changes of government and elections in some countries.

Economic growth in Brazil could not only increase M&A activity in the country, but also lead Brazilian companies to rethink the region as an investment destination.

As for Mexico, Mexican investment is expected to remain focused on its trade relationship with North America, being relatively marginal in the rest of Latin America. In Argentina, recent announcements by President Javier Milei suggest an increase in local transactional activity through privatizations, Trujillo said.

Lina Uribe de Gómez-Pinzón noted that in Colombia, entrepreneurs will face new attempts at reforms by the government, such as labor reform, pension reform and persistent health reform. However, it is confident that the institutions and the opposition will be able to react in order to maintain some stability in the Colombian market.

In his speech, Vecchio made reference to the economic situation in Venezuela, where the main export products come from the agricultural sector, and stressed the importance of granting credits to further promote this economic field.

“In the case of Venezuela, the credit portfolio reached 1,004 million dollars in June, destined mainly to the National Productive Single Portfolio, covering items such as white corn, yellow corn, rice and legumes. In addition, support has been provided to items such as coffee and cocoa, both for domestic consumption and for export, as well as to other agricultural sectors, the food and pharmaceutical sectors,” explained Vecchio.

Another relevant credit area mentioned by the expert was support for entrepreneurs. To date, there are approximately 700,000 businesses under development in the country, and this figure is expected to exceed one million by the end of 2023. He also highlighted microcredits for legal entities, which benefit small businesses.

“Even so, we still have a pending task: the rescue of loans in sectors of interest, such as vehicles, mortgages and consumer loans. It is essential to renew a significant part of the cargo, passenger and transport fleet staff,” the analyst continued.

Vecchio optimistically pointed out that, compared to the same period of the previous year, national banks show positive indicators and results at the end of December 2022, a trend that has been maintained at the end of the first half of 2023.

“It is noteworthy that 98 % of bank transactions are digital, and bank access has reached levels of 84 %. In this sense, bank branches have reduced their role in customer service, focusing on those aspects that require physical presence,” Vecchio stressed.

In addition, the analyst praised the process of modernization of the means of payment promoted by the Central Bank of Venezuela (BCV), which has led the country to become a digital economy.

These advances include immediate credit services and the Real Time Global Gross Settlement System (LBTR) and immediate debit, which will significantly facilitate the payment system in the country. With these developments, Venezuela is moving towards a more solid and modern financial future.

One of the main reasons for this scenario is the war between Russia and Ukraine, in addition to the uncertainty in the world market as a result of this war.

The decline in the price of Brent Crude at the beginning of this week is estimated at 4 % compared to the previous close. In the last twelve months, in fact, the benchmark crude oil for Europe has accumulated a drop of at least 40 %.

For its part, the benchmark West Texas crude for the United States also shows a downward trend, going from USD 66.74 from the previous close to 64.12 dollars.

According to recent estimates by Swati Dhingra, a member of the Bank of England’s Monetary Policy Committee, the United Kingdom’s departure from the European Union has been the main cause of the increase in the prices of all goods and services.

But the effect of Brexit does not stop there. Well, according to Dhingra, it also has a high incidence in a drop in wages compared to “other advanced economies.”

Dhingra said on Wednesday: “It is undeniable that we are seeing a much greater slowdown in trade in the UK, compared to the rest of the world,” during his speech in the House of Commons Treasury committee.

The economist stressed that Brexit has pushed workers’ wages to be 2.6 % below what they could have been; At the same time, it has generated an increase in the price of food of 6 %.

For its part, the National Statistics Office (NSO) pointed out that the “consumer price index (CPI) of the United Kingdom stood at 11.1 % in October, compared to 10.1 % in September”, with what which reach “the highest level in 41 years”.

This company, valued at $ 7 billion, recently reported that land and cryptocurrencies are two assets that can combat the devaluation of the currency.

The co-founder of the company, Peter Doyle, stressed that the global pandemic due to Covid-19 and the increase in debts of the countries will be the beginning of a “turning point” for the world economy and in his opinion the possible options to face These complications are “devaluation or default of the currency.“

“There is no way back after the pandemic and, globally, there are economic problems that translate into indebtedness or devaluation of the currency,” said Doyle. That is why he thinks that citizens should have access to this class of assets.

He also stated that savvy investors tend to focus on concentrated, low-turnover portfolios in their holdings, as they allow companies to grow to compound returns.

The company, Horizon Kinetics, is heading in the opposite direction from where other investors are. According to the firm, they research industries in depth to look for only value-driven investments.

Despite the collapse of the cryptocurrency market, the company has three funds: Small-Cap, Spin-off & Corporate Restructuring that registered the best performance during the year, with profits of more than 50 % for the organization.

While another of his funds, the Kinetics Paradigm fund, also obtained dividends in the order of 48 %, which places the firm among the top ten mutual funds in the industry.
