Meta, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, launched the “Ray-Ban Stories” on the Spanish market, smart glasses, very similar to normal ones, which have built-in cameras and microphones that were designed in collaboration with the manufacturer EssilorLuxottica. Smart glasses allow you to record everything that happens around the people who wear them and publish it instantly on social networks.

The device went on sale in Spain, Austria and Belgium for a value of 329 euros, while in France they will be in stores starting next April. These lenses are indistinguishable from normal Ray-Bans, but on both front ends of the frame they have a 5-megapixel camera.

According to the information provided by the company, the Ray-Ban Stories can take photos and record videos through voice commands or with the shutter button that is integrated into the frame. Additionally, the glasses also have a speaker system and three microphones that allow you to make phone calls and save the recording.

People with these glasses will be able to make videos of up to 30 seconds, but the company plans to make an update in April to increase the recording to one minute. This update will be in the Facebook View app, available for iOS and Android. They come in different models and types of crystals, up to 28 different combinations.

Ankit Brahmbhatt, head of development for Ray-Ban Stories, explained that Meta’s priority has been the design of the glasses and their goal “is to make them look as similar as possible to conventional glasses, which is why the networking corporation social has agreed with EssilorLuxottica. However, he has recognized that this also poses the challenge that the device does not become a tool to spy on other people”.

The company noted that since Ray-Ban Stories was conceived, they were aware “of the responsibility that comes with ensuring that people feel comfortable and safe using Ray-Ban Stories,” which applies to both the people who use the device and who are around them.

Educational campaign for Ray-Ban Stories

The multinational Meta is planning an educational campaign in different countries of the European Union with the aim of raising awareness about the guidelines to follow in the use of glasses or the need to stop a recording when someone around you requests it. “These indications will alert people to be cautious when taking photos of minors”.

The company has also published informational material or guides on “the correct use” of the glasses, which can be found in the Facebook View app. The company also recommends turning off the device when entering a private place and notifying people nearby when a photo or video will be taken.
