Germany will receive liquefied natural gas (LNG) from Canada through the first 20-year supply agreement to Europe, with a contract between the Ksi Lisims LNG project and the German state-owned company SEFE.

According to Canadian Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Tim Hodgson, “SEFE (Securing Energy for Europe) will purchase one million tons of LNG annually,” with deliveries scheduled to begin in the early 2030s.

With this agreement, Germany becomes the first European country to purchase Canadian liquefied natural gas, which “represents a further step in European efforts to reduce energy dependence on Russia following the Russian invasion of Ukraine.”

Hodgson added that this contract extends beyond the energy sector and linked it to “Prime Minister Mark Carney’s government’s strategy to strengthen Canadian economic sovereignty and expand trade outside the United States.”

More than 30 billion Canadian dollars in investments (21.6 billion US dollars or 18.65 billion euros) will be negotiated. The project is also expected to create thousands of jobs and generate more than 15 billion Canadian dollars in economic activity.

The trend will be upward; consumer prices are expected to rise by 2.7 % this year and 2.8 % next year. “Inflation is primarily limiting private households, which are projected to increase their consumer spending by only 0.4 % after 2026 and 0.5 % in 2027, a significant reason for the weak growth outlook,” Reiche added.

The current scenario in Germany is characterized by a decline in foreign trade, stagnant exports, and a loss of industrial capacity in the face of international competition.

Regarding public consumption, an increase of 2 % is projected for 2026 and 1.3 % next year. “The expansion of energy price subsidies is also contributing to this. At the same time, government demand is driving investment: investment in equipment is projected to increase by 1.1 % this year and 4.4 % next year.”

According to the company, last year renewable energy accounted for “54.7 % of Germany’s electricity generation, led by wind and solar PV. By 2035, renewable generation is expected to reach 628 TWh, representing 82.9% of the energy mix, driven by the large-scale expansion of solar PV and the development of onshore and offshore wind farms.”

The goal for 2030, according to Mohammed Ziauddin, energy analyst at GlobalData, is to reach 80 % renewable generation, supported by its Renewable Energy Act (EEG), the National Hydrogen Strategy, and significant investment in modernizing the electricity grid.

But the European country still faces challenges, “such as grid congestion, the Dunkelflaute (periods of low renewable production), and the slow deployment of dispatchable gas-fired generation capacity to support intermittent renewables.”

Added to this are rising energy prices, uncertainty regarding regulatory frameworks, and lengthy permitting processes for wind projects that also limit deployment.

But from the experts’ point of view, it is by no means guaranteed that Germany will return, in the medium or long term, to the path of economic success.”

The councilors believe the old German economic model must give way to a more realistic one, in line with current and future challenges. According to Monika Schnitzer, chairwoman of the Council of Experts, it is necessary to promote the transition to new business models and professions, as well as increased production and the implementation of digitalization to reduce bureaucracy.

At the same time, and to address Donald Trump’s tariffs, Economy Minister Katherina Reiche announced measures to be implemented by mid-July, such as “the reduction of the electricity tax and initial reforms to the labor market,” according to the policy of the conservative Christian Democratic Union (CDU) at an economic forum.
