The German Minister for Transport and Digitization, Volker Wissing, called for the rapid development of legal rules for the application of artificial intelligence (AI) in the European Union.

“We must react sensibly now and regulate artificial intelligence before it is too late for it. This should not take years again,” he urged in statements published this Sunday by the newspaper Bild am Sonntag.

Currently all the rage is the program that automatically creates text ChatGPT, Google’s competing software Bard, and programs that can generate images from text descriptions.

At the same time, there are concerns that this AI-based technology could be misused, for example, to spread false information.

“It is essential to find a balance between openness to innovation and a clear legal framework that defines standards for trustworthy AI,” an Interior Ministry spokeswoman told the Handelsblatt newspaper.

In his words, in the European debates for an AI regulation, the German government has advocated making visible in a publicly accessible database the use of certain high-risk AI systems by the public administration.

He explained that these are systems that could be used in areas of border control or law enforcement – for example, to predict the probability of crime.

Minister Wissing stressed that the legal framework must ensure that new technology can only be used if it respects European values ​​such as democracy, transparency and neutrality. “AI systems should not manipulate us, they should support us.” At the same time, he stressed that he sees huge opportunities in the use of AI.
