The President of the United States, Joe Biden, and Nguyen Phu Trong, the highest Vietnamese authority, have formalized a historic agreement that elevates the bilateral relationship to the category of strategic partnership.

This step represents an important advance in the US strategy to counter China’s influence in the region.

Biden, during a press conference in Hanoi after his meeting with Nguyen Phu Trong, highlighted that this new status will be a pillar of prosperity and security in one of the most crucial regions in the world.

Strengthening relationships in the global context

Joe Biden framed the strengthening of relations with Vietnam within his extensive network of international alliances, which he has been weaving since his arrival at the White House in January 2021.

This pact joins other efforts, such as the revitalization of the QUAD defense alliance and the creation in 2021 of the AUKUS tripartite pact (which includes Australia, the United Kingdom and the United States).

In practical terms, the agreement aims to boost semiconductor production in Vietnam, which has already established itself as a leading manufacturing hub in the region.

Some American companies, such as Intel, view Vietnam as an alternative manufacturing destination to China.

This movement seeks to diversify the supply chain and reduce dependence on a single country in the production of key electronic components.
