General Motors will invest more than 7,000 million dollars in four of its plants in Michigan, United States, to expand the production capacity of batteries and electric vehicles. The company highlighted that this amount will allow the creation of 4,000 new jobs and the maintenance of 1,000 additional jobs, while indicating that it is the largest individual investment in its history.

This economic injection contemplates the construction, by the hand of Ultium Cells, of a battery cell plant in Lansing (Michigan) and the conversion of the Orion Township center for the manufacture of electric versions of the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra models.

The president and CEO of General Motors, Mary Barra, stated that this “significant investment” demonstrates the company’s commitment to strengthening its industrial presence in Michigan and the United States, as well as increasing the number of jobs “well remunerated.”

“We will have the products, the battery cell production capacity and the vehicle manufacturing capacity to be the leader in electric mobility by the middle of the decade,” assured the head of the automobile group.

General Motors investments

The investments in Orion and the creation of the new Ultium Cells plant in Lansing will serve as a boost to expand the company’s 100 % electric SUV production capacity to 600,000 units per year.  Thus, General Motors will inject 4,000 million dollars in the adaptation of the Orion center for the manufacture of the electric GMC Sierra and Chevrolet Silverado, which will use the new Ultium platform.

On the other hand, Ultium Cells, a joint venture created by General Motors and LG Energy Solution, will invest 2,600 million dollars in the construction of its third battery cell manufacturing plant in the United States. It will allow the creation of 1,700 new jobs a once it is fully operational, which is scheduled to happen at the end of 2024.

General Motors will also invest $510 million in the Lansing Delta Township Assembly and Lansing Grand River Assembly plants, which will be upgraded for new model production.

“Despite a challenging second year in a row, TMNA ​​was focused on delivering an exceptional customer experience and we remain optimistic as our electrification strategy continues to evolve,” commented TMNA ​​Senior Vice President of Automotive Operations Jack Hollis.

For its part, General Motors blamed this decline in sales on the semiconductor crisis.
