The new proposal naturally has its followers and detractors. During the negotiations that began last March, the union had demanded that the Government reach the figure of 500,000 pesos already this May, due to the “high” inflation that is taking place in Chile. This goal must be achieved as soon as possible, we cannot wait,” said the president of the union, David Acuña.

This amount, however, was the goal of the cabinet chaired by Gabriel Boric for the year 2026, at the end of his term. Despite their intention of a greater increase, from the Government, they had considered that it was necessary to reach a balance between the demand of the unions and the capacity of small and medium-sized companies to pay wages.

Last January an initial increase of 50,000 pesos (58.2 euros) was carried out, to which another 10,000 pesos (11.39 euros) were added, thus reaching 410,000 pesos (about 477 euros).

From the CUT they have celebrated that the talks to advance the arrival of the 500,000 pesos are advancing, as part of their “commitment” in the search to overcome the poverty line and create social policies that deliver “a good life” to workers.

The Chilean Congress of Deputies has approved by a large majority the bill to reduce the working day from 45 to 40 hours a week, a new legislation that must now be ratified by the country’s president, Gabriel Boric.

The Lower House has approved with 127 votes in favor and only fourteen against – all of them from the far-right Republican Party – this bill, formulated four years ago by the then deputy and now executive spokesperson, Camila Vallejo.

In 2019 Congress already approved the proposal, although it is true that the Senate kept it blocked until Boric assumed the Presidency and promoted the vote on a law that had been one of the fundamental pillars of his candidacy, according to the T13 chain.

Now President Boric must definitively promulgate this law, and from the Executive they hope that the final signature can be given on May 1, taking advantage of the commemoration of International Workers’ Day.

The Secretary of Labor, Giorgio Boccardo, explained that the Government’s objective is to gradually implement the 40-hour workday over the next five years, in such a way that companies reduce their employees’ weekly hours by one hour each year.

However, Boccardo has confirmed that those companies that commit to an immediate reduction in the working day will receive in return the ’40-hour Seal’, a special certification from the Government.

The Senate Finance Commission will resume discussion of the project this week and the initiative would be voted on in full in the second half of March. The standard provides for a gradual implementation, with a reduction to 44 hours in the first year of validity, to 42 in the third and 40 in the fifth year.

• Reduction of tax exemptions: It is related to the set of measures that will make it possible to dispense with loopholes that facilitate misrepresentation, in addition to strengthening the capacity to combat tax evasion, facilitating tax compliance for taxpayers.
• A new mining royalty: Which will increase the income resulting from the exploitation of non-renewable resources, without discouraging investments and the development of the sector. This tax will support “the country’s productive diversification,” as well as financing regional governments for their investments in social infrastructure and productive development.
• Corrective taxes: Which will be used to “promote the preservation of the environment, reduce emissions, the development of a healthy life and balanced territorial development.
