Data published by the Venezuelan-Colombian Chamber (Cavecol) shows that despite the increase, “Venezuelan exports to Colombia experienced a contraction of 7.8 %, remaining at $12.8 million.”

According to Cavecol, this situation is a result “not only of the beginning of the year, but also of the instability in terms of the environment, which is directly related to market confidence and fluidity.”

Among the Venezuelan products whose exports to Colombia grew in January are: fertilizers, iron and steel castings, aluminum and its manufactures, fuels and oils, and organic chemical products.

Regarding imports of Colombian products, a notable increase of 34.2 % was recorded in the first month of 2025, reaching a total value of $ 67.4 million.

“This reflects the high complementarity and efficiency of Venezuelan-Colombian trade in terms of nearshoring, where Colombia can broadly and quickly supply (land transportation and logistics) the demand for Venezuelan products,” indicated Cavecol.

“The future of Venezuela lies in gas and most of the deposits in the country are virgin and are gigantic reservoirs,” said the economist.

According to Toro Hardy, the Caribbean country, the gas that “we have exploited, to date, is called associated gas: when producing oil what makes the crude oil flow from the reservoir to the surface is the gas it contains.”

Replacing the oil will take time

For some time, various global organizations have been working to replace fossil fuels with other elements that are less polluting and have less impact on the environment. However, the economist points out that there are several years to go before said replacement can take place.

“The replacement of fossil fuels like coal, oil will take longer than expected”, the economist said and added that the war between Russia and Ukraine generated a crisis in the oil area and all of Europe is “desperate for oil” and the international market is requiring the oil supplied by Venezuela and Iran.

Hydrocarbons have registered a sustained growth in their prices during this 2021 in Brazil, stimulated by the revaluation of oil in the international market, coupled with the loss of the value of the Brazilian real against the dollar.

The rise in diesel during the year is equivalent to 65 % and gasoline in 73 % in the different refineries of the South American country, which had an impact on the final consumer. The increase in fuels has also caused, in a decisive way, the increase in inflation, which has exceeded double digits, currently registering 10.7 %.

Bolsonaro without control over Petrobras

The president of Brazil has complained, on multiple occasions, about the increase in fuel prices, especially forced by the heavy cargo sector or truck drivers, who make up part of the social support of his government and are now threatening to go on strike as protest measure against the increase in fuels.

On several occasions, Bolsonaro has declared that he does not have the power to manage and “interfere in Petrobas and that he will not control the prices of anything”, although at the same time he recognizes that he is “looking for formulas to change the calculation method.”

After several criticisms of the increase in fuel prices, last February Bolsonaro appointed Joaquin Silva e Luna, general of the army reserve, as Petrobas president. However, the adjustments continued and it is currently expected that the necessary measures will actually be taken to reduce prices.

The Secretary of State for the Environment, Jochen Flasbarth, and a representative of the British presidency of the World Climate Conference (COP26) signed the corresponding document in Glasgow.

The alliance, which 28 countries joined, stipulates that the signatories will stop investing state funds in fossil fuel projects outside their territories by the end of 2022.

There are exceptions in “clearly defined circumstances that are consistent with the 1.5 degree target and the Paris Agreement,” the statement said.

Flasbarth, who co-leads the German delegation, said that these exemptions apply to projects that in the future generate energy based on green hydrogen. He added that this was also the reason why he was initially hesitant to join the deal.

He recalled that Germany withdrew long ago from financing coal projects abroad, which facilitates the achievement of the objective established in the declaration. The Secretary of State for the Environment explained that, to some extent, support for gas projects is still necessary, especially for countries that want to make the transition from coal to renewable energy.
