Sánchez announced Spain’s decision during his participation in the World Government Summit in Dubai. The president added that his country “has focused on digital governance as a central issue of our era that must be addressed globally in the face of the failed state into which the social media ecosystem has devolved, where laws are ignored and crimes are tolerated.”

He also referred to the “lack of governance in content control and impunity for those who violate the law, the spread of disinformation and hate speech, and the lack of protection of personal data and material as serious dangers that challenge the protection of rights and freedoms and distort reality, particularly for minors who have integrated the use of social media into their daily lives.”

The priority is the protection of minors, in addition to greater control over social media. This will be reinforced by the Executive’s push to include in the penal code the manipulation of algorithms and the amplification of illegal content. This will be a joint effort with the Public Prosecutor’s Office “to prosecute potential legal infractions by Google, TikTok, and Instagram and will defend Spain’s digital sovereignty” against any type of foreign coercion.

Repeat offenses will be penalized with a €20,000 fine, and in extreme cases, authorities may ban travelers from flying for up to four years.

The measure was adopted to curb inappropriate behavior on aircraft, which is considered “a growing threat to passengers and flight crew.”

Among the grounds for fines are refusing to turn off cell phones during flights when cabin crew have prohibited their use for the entire flight or during any phase thereof; obstructing “the performance of safety duties by flight crew”; and, finally, “refusal to comply with safety instructions given by flight personnel.”

The decree applies to flights operated by airlines licensed in France. “The system implements a specific database that will be managed by the French Civil Aviation Authority (DGAC), with the function of centralizing reports of disruptive behavior submitted by French airlines.”

It is important to clarify that “these administrative sanctions are in addition to the possibility of initiating criminal proceedings for the most serious offenses, which can carry prison sentences of up to five years and fines of €75,000.”

Greece appears to have initiated the proposal, now followed by Spain and France. In the latter, the government already requires certain controls regarding social media use by children under 15.

Macron has called for a swift decision in the region regarding measures such as limiting the time young people spend online and the content they can access, as well as the actions they could take online, such as online purchases, which could even pose a danger to users and third parties.

The European country could have “thousands of troops” made up of its own robots by 2040, which would help in cases of human exposure in territorial defense situations.

According to General Bruno Baratz, commander of future combat programs for the French Army, the nation is designing “the first robot prototypes, which would comprise an army of thousands of units.” The first tests are expected to take place in 2028 “and by 2040 they would have an entire fleet ready.”

They are banking on ground robots capable of equipping the national defense forces. “We believe we will be able to deploy advanced systems with practical utility for our combat elements well before 2040,” Baratz stated.

So far, they have tested “bipedal and quadruped robots, drones that attack from the sky, and wheeled machines.”

According to General Tony Maffeis, head of the Army’s technical branch, they still need to demonstrate “that (the machines) can be more effective when coming into contact with an adversary. The robot should facilitate combat, not hinder it.”

The goal is to present a more affordable alternative to YouTube Premium. “This new plan seeks to offer a more affordable solution for those who don’t need to pay for the full family plan, but still want to share an account with someone close to them, such as a partner or roommate.”

The decision responds to requests from the video platform’s users for more flexible models for digital subscriptions. It will be implemented simply: “both users must be registered in the same Google family group, a requirement that YouTube already uses for its family plan.”

Once this information is verified, customers will enjoy Premium benefits in their personal accounts, which will not require sharing passwords or profiles. “This model also allows for separate recommendations, history, and playlists, which is key to shared use.”

The devices will remain in lockers or sealed bags in order to reduce the exposure of young people between 11 and 14 years old to screens. With this measure, France is strengthening safety and well-being measures. Students will be able to pick up their cell phones at the end of classes, once the electronic security lock has been unlocked.

With this measure, the French government strengthens the regulations in this area it has implemented since 2018, when smartphones were banned in schools, arguing that “they must remain turned off and stored in students’ backpacks throughout the school day.”

The decision was announced by the French Minister of Education, Élisabeth Borne, before the Senate, stating: “At a time when the use of screens is widely questioned due to its numerous harmful effects, this measure is essential for the well-being and academic success of our children.”

The French government has referred to this ban as a “digital break,” part of a pilot program “that has been implemented in around one hundred French secondary schools during the current academic year to test the effects of not using mobile devices for the entire school day on more than 50,000 students over the age of 11.”

This was announced in a joint statement by the National Syndicate of Publishing (SNE), the Society of Literary Enthusiasts (SGL), and the National Syndicate of Authors and Composers (SNAC).

In this regard, the president of the SNE, Vincent Montagne, stated that they have noted “the presence of numerous works published by members of the National Syndicate of Publishing among the data corpora used by Meta.”

For this reason, they have filed the lawsuit before the Paris Judicial Court with the aim of protecting the union “from the dangers of AI, which plunders their works and cultural heritage to train itself and produce ‘fake books’ that compete with authentic author’s books,” according to François Peyrony, president of SNAC.

The unions have based their lawsuit on current European regulations, “since the regulation on artificial intelligence (the ‘AI Act’) insists on the need for creators of solutions using this technology to respect copyright and guarantee the transparency of the sources used to develop their models.”

It is the second time that the company has been under judicial investigation for these alleged crimes, which could also include drug trafficking.

In fact, it is said that this new investigation would be an extension of the investigation started in France in 2023, “which focused on the alleged role of the platform in aiding money laundering and illicit financing activities, among other alleged violations.”

That year, the cryptocurrency exchange market experienced a collapse due to the bankruptcy of FTX and other platforms. “The US Securities and Exchange Commission, the Department of Justice and other agencies have taken legal action against large operators such as Binance, Coinbase and other cryptocurrency operators.”

Among the most high-profile cases was that of Coinbase, which refuted the claims and made. In the case of Binance, the company “reached the largest settlement in DOJ history. The company agreed to pay $4.3 billion in fines, with improvements in compliance and changes in management. However, the SEC case against the largest centralized company continued.”
