In the fourth quarter of 2023, the frequency of aircraft, calculated in terms of paid passenger-kilometres (RPK), reached 98.4 % of the levels of the same period four years ago. IATA, which brings together 320 airlines representing 83 % of world air traffic, said in its monthly statistics that this translates into a “strong recovery” by the end of the year.

Border closures and other travel restrictions imposed since March 2020, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, had devastating effects on passenger air transport, which fell that year to 34.2 % compared to the 2019 level, according to the agency.

The recovery did not come until 2021, when 41.6 % of the pre-pandemic level was reached, and in 2022, with 68.5 %.

“The strong recovery from the pandemic continued into 2023,” said IATA Director General Willie Walsh, quoted in a statement. This augurs a “return to normal growth patterns by 2024. The recovered health of the travel industry is good news.”

The activity was again boosted by domestic routes, which in 2023 reached 103.9 % of their 2019 RPK, according to IATA. The trend accelerated with the end of movement restrictions in China, after three years of stringent measures, where domestic flights reached 107.1 % of 2019 levels.

Latin American Airlines posted the strongest year-on-year performance of all regions, with a 2.0 % increase in demand in 2023 compared to 2022 (+1.9 % for international operations).

This measure reverses the prohibition to carry out flight operations in Venezuelan territory and airspace below 26,000 feet.

With this decision, the notice known as NOTAM C0013/19 of May 1, 2019 is annulled, which grants permission to airlines and commercial operators in the United States, as well as to aircraft registered in that country, excluding air operators. foreign.

For its part, the government of President Joe Biden denied recent reports disseminated by the propaganda media of the Nicolás Maduro regime about an alleged resumption of direct flights between the United States and the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela.

It is important to clarify that the FAA’s removal of the no-fly ban allows US civilian operators to use Venezuelan airspace in a pinch to safely divert and avoid dangerous weather conditions common in the region. However, this action does not imply the authorization of commercial flights to and from Venezuela.

Air passenger traffic in Latin America reached 31.3 million people transported in January, which is equivalent to 96.4 % of the figure registered in the same month of 2019, prior to the pandemic.

Thus, according to the monthly report prepared by the Latin American and Caribbean Air Transport Association (ALTA), air traffic in the region slowed down compared to the immediately previous month, when it reached pre-pandemic levels.

In addition, January 2023 was the first month in which another region led the recovery of passengers, this being Africa. Thus, Latin America moved to second place, closely followed by the Middle East and North America, which both registered 95.7 % recovery.

The regions of Europe and Southeast Asia were further behind, although with the reopening of China, it is expected that at least the latter will improve its recovery levels.

Currently, all airlines encourage passengers to activate “airplane mode” during takeoff and landing of the plane, by means of a light signal that indicates when they must do so.

This is a security measure implemented by companies to avoid interference with any other electrical or telecommunications system on the plane, which, if it exists, could cause a plane crash.

On the rest of the flight, it is possible to use a paid Wi-Fi network on some airlines (including Iberia or Air Europa) when the plane has already exceeded a certain height, and is off both the takeoff and landing runways.

As indicated by the Commission, since 2008 it reserves certain frequencies for mobile communications on aircraft, a decision on on-board communications that has recently been updated with the widespread deployment of 5G services.

Now the EU announced that all passengers on board flights in the region will be able to both keep their electronic devices turned on and their mobile data activated, in order to use 5G networks.

In this way, passengers will be able to access connectivity “to the maximum of its capacity and characteristics, as with a 5G mobile network on land.”

It should be noted that the European Commission also introduced novelties for road transport, where Wi-Fi with 5 GHz frequency bands can be implemented in cars, buses and other means of transport. This will become effective on June 30, 2023 “at the latest”, according to the institution.
