New York Governor Kathy Hochul announced on Thursday, November 7, that the city will have the first semiconductor research center, called the NanoTech Complex.

The measure is part of the CHIPS and Science Act, approved in 2022, which aims to “improve the technological competitiveness of the United States against China and includes more than $52 billion in incentives for domestic semiconductor production.”

The NanoTech center will be located in the state capital, Albany, and will become a center specialized in “extreme ultraviolet (EUV) technology research and development and will be eligible for up to $825 million in federal funding,” Hochul said.

It is the first of three research centers that will make up the federal consortium of the National Semiconductor Technology Center (NSTC).

The Department of Commerce has indicated that it expects the center to begin operations in 2025, following the preliminary agreement, which will allow them to accelerate the mass production of smaller and faster microchips.
