These expenses can be for coffee, the snacks and candy you buy daily, soda, or mineral water. Personal finance experts point to these expenses as the culprits of an annual loss of hundreds of dollars.

In this way, the budget slowly evaporates. This is money that could easily be spent on savings or investments. However, consumers seem not to perceive small expenditures as a threat to their personal finances.

They clarify that the problem isn’t really the amount spent, as it can be a product worth cents on the dollar (or any other national currency); the real problem lies in the constant accumulation of these small outgoings.

The impact of small expenses materializes over the long term. That is, when the end of the year arrives, or at tax time, the individual realizes that this money leak could have been saved for a family vacation, a home repair, children’s education, among others.

This is an unconscious expense because the salary is diluted, so to speak, in impulsive, uncontrolled purchases that become a habit rather than a pleasure. Small expenses can also be classified as services that thousands of people subscribe to and then don’t enjoy.

Some economists also point to services such as delivery, which make life easier for consumers but add consumption that could sometimes be avoided. Such services can even double the cost of a meal or a good, which often isn’t really needed.

Without a doubt, another current, deeply rooted, petty expense worldwide is impulse purchases on social media and online stores. Economists refer to these consumptions as “cravings.”

Reducing petty spending is possible with discipline

(Reference image source: Alexander Mils on Unsplash)

But is it possible to identify if you are making petty spending? A review of monthly spending habits through bank statements can be helpful. Accounting for payments, even small amounts, can lead to a total sum that can threaten personal or family financial stability.

If the sum of these invisible expenses represents 20 % or 30 % of monthly income, measures must be taken to curb these cravings or unjustified payments for services that are not used and that may even generate fines for late payments.

Asking yourself, when faced with a seemingly small expense, whether it’s really necessary can help you reflect and prioritize each purchase. You might conclude that it’s an impulse, not a necessity.

Designing a monthly, biweekly, or weekly budget is another way to control small expenses. Currently, with the help of AI, there are various financial applications that help you plan this efficiently. And, of course, it’s not about not treating yourself once in a while, but rather about controlling impulse spending.

Although the nation has given its support to the Markets in Cryptoassets Regulation (MiCA), it is currently analyzing a project on additional regulations to promote financial stability, led at the Central Bank by Kjetil Watne.

Watne has stressed that the bank has not yet made a decision but “is evaluating how to mitigate regulatory gaps related to decentralized finance.”

The project director has indicated that the Central Bank sees central bank digital currencies as a tool to improve cross-border transactions, without replacing fiat money or cash payments.

Support for MiCA but with caution

The European Union’s MiCA regulation comes into force on December 30. In this regard, its implementation could pose systematic risks for stablecoin reserves, according to Paolo Ardoino, CEO of Tether.

“Under MiCA, stablecoin issuers will be required to hold a significant portion of their reserves, at least 60 %, in European banks, which creates a concern regarding lending,” Ardoino stresses, noting that the MiCA requirements “could create significant points of vulnerability for reserves if a bank holding them goes bankrupt” considering that banks can lend up to 90% of their reserves.

While upward changes are seen in Colombia and Mexico.

The exchange market experiences a dynamic similar to the see-saw game, with fluctuations that have a direct impact on the daily lives of citizens.

In the case of the United States, last week the Fed indicated that rates remain at 5.5 %, for the fifth consecutive time. Mexico, for its part, made an adjustment after three years on Saturday, March 23, to set them at 11 % according to the Bank of Mexico (Banxico).

Ecuador raised interest rates 0.19 points at the beginning of March, from 10.34 % to 10.53 % annually, according to the official macroeconomic data report.

On the contrary, in Colombia the Bank of the Republic published on March 22 a cut in interest rates to 12.25 %.

These are some reference data on how the interest rate sector in America is moving in the first quarter of the year. The implications of these upward or downward adjustments can be seen directly in the inflation index, prices of goods and services, financing and loans, as well as the debt that each nation maintains.

The Tron blockchain hosted the most recent issuance of Tether, with 1 billion USDT created on November 10, according to data provided by Whale Alert. This latest action follows the issuance of 1 billion USDT on Ethereum on November 9, as well as the 2 billion issued in two batches on Tron on November 3 and October 19.

Paolo Ardoino, CTO and new CEO of Tether, commented on the Whale Alert data on X, highlighting that the 1 billion USDT transaction on the Tron network was a “USDT inventory replenishment.” He clarified that this amount will be used as inventory for issuance requests in the next period and on-chain exchanges.

These new USDT issued represent a substantial portion of the total 22.75 billion USDT that Tether plans to mint in 2023, according to data from Whale Alert. Of the total, 57% (13 billion) have been issued on the Tron blockchain, while the remaining 9.75 billion have been launched on the Ethereum blockchain.

Throughout the year, Tether has been actively involved in minting new stablecoins. In March 2023, the company issued 9 billion USDT, adding to the 3 billion minted the previous month. Significant emissions between June 12 and July 12 also stand out, where 3.75 billion USDT were created.

In addition to minting new coins, Tether has carried out USDT burns. In August, 1.2 billion USDT was burned on the Tron blockchain, following previous burns of 3.1 billion in June and 2 billion in February, both on Tron and Ethereum respectively.

The crypto community has reacted quickly to these latest USDT issuances, recalling past events where aggressive Tether issuances coincided with significant banking events. Although some speculate about possible connections, Tether has categorically denied any relationship with banks such as Silicon Valley Bank, Silvergate, and Signature Bank.

In addition to the active issuance of new coins, Tether is working on integrating important projects into the ecosystem, according to CEO Ardoino. The company is expected to announce five new projects in 2024, some of which could have a significant impact on popular Web2 centralized services.

Given the situation of instability and the lack of confidence in the entity, the Swiss government has decided to “support the purchase of Credit Suisse by UBS”, Berset pointed out at a press conference from the Federal Palace in Bern.

“The situation is known, Credit Suisse is one of the 30 systemic banks worldwide. It is one of the two largest banks in the country. It is therefore not only decisive for Switzerland, for our companies, for private customers, for its own employees, but also for the stability of the entire financial system,” added Berset.

The Swiss leader has referred to the “significant turbulence” suffered in recent days by various financial markets. “This turbulence destabilized the most fragile banks, and this was the case with Credit Suisse. Despite good capitalization, Credit Suisse has lost the confidence of the banks,” he explained.

Consequently, “in the face of such a loss of confidence, ensuring the supply of liquidity to a bank is one of the measures to be taken as the highest priority.” For this reason, the Government approved on Thursday night 50,000 million in immediate liquidity for Credit Suisse, which was already known. Now Berset has announced that the total guarantees amount to 100 billion Swiss francs.

Already on Friday the government came to the conclusion that “the necessary confidence could no longer be restored and that a quick solution was essential to guarantee stability.”

With the execution of the project, it is planned to establish an “open source market intelligence platform to shed light on market capitalizations, economic activity and risks to financial stability.”

The BIS cryptocurrency market intelligence platform will enter the framework of the Eurosystem, which aims to “provide verified data on cryptocurrency projects”.

An important factor for the execution of the project is the different problems or collapses that some stablecoins and decentralized finance (DeFi) lending platforms such as Terra (LUNA) and Decentralized USD (USDD) have experienced.

Greater security and lower costs

The development of a market intelligence platform goes against “the norm of relying on self-reported information by unregulated companies when it comes to data on backing asset, trading volumes and market capitalization.”

The Bank for International Settlements also pointed out that quantum computers can easily break the cryptography used by traditional financial institutions to attest and settle payments. Hence, the decision to manage a Eurosystem Center project to experiment with different “cryptographic solutions and to examine the overall performance of the traditional system”.

Likewise, the institution’s Sela initiative will investigate “technological solutions to allow the issuance of CBDC through intermediaries, while guaranteeing greater security and lower costs.”

Likewise, the Treasury Department spokesperson stressed that the entity “does not plan to incorporate algorithmic stable currencies within the laws, saying that they do not ensure stability. Terrausd (UST) is an instance of an algorithmic stablecoin.”

For his part, the British Chancellor of the Exchequer, Rishi Sunak, explained that the plan will certify that the UK currency industry is always at the forefront of technology and innovation.

Crypto property regulation plan

The Treasury spokesman pointed out that the laws that will allow stable currencies to be regulated, as well as the sites that can be used as a means of payment, are part of the Money Markets and Services Bill presented during the speech made to the Queen.

As will be remembered, recently Prince Charles delivered the speech detailing the UK government’s legislative agenda in which “particularly cryptographic ownership” is contemplated.

A detailed plan is contemplated within the regulatory agenda “to make the nation a world cryptographic center and a suitable place for cryptocurrencies.”

This plan aims to create a “dynamic regulatory framework for cryptocurrencies, regulate stablecoins and deal with the Royal Mint to create a non-fungible token (NFT),” the spokesperson explained.
