The USB Promoter Group, the body in charge of defining the standard for this connectivity, announced the USB 4 2.0 version, which will double the data transfer speed up to 80 Gbps (gigabits per second) with the same USB-C cable.

The entity released the specifications of the new USB 4 standard based on Thunderbolt in March 2019. That first version supported transfer rates of up to 40 Gbps and was compatible with USB type C cables.

Now, the agency said in a statement the first details of the USB 4 2.0 version, which is expected to double these transfer speeds to 80 Gbps.

These levels will be present in both existing passive 40Gbps USB-C cables and new 80Gbps active USB-Type-C cables, which are yet to come. The difference between one and the other is that the passive ones do not have integrated chips and the active ones do, to favor a faster transfer.

In turn, the USB Promoter Group announced that both the specifications of USB-C and USB Power Delivery (PD), the charging protocol present in USB-C cables and connectors, will be updated to allow these transfer levels and be compatible with USB4 2.0.

The group will also upgrade protocols to allow higher performance USB 3.2, DisplayPort and PCI Express in order to “better utilize available bandwidth.” In the case of USB 3.2, its new architecture will allow it to exceed 20 Gbps speed in its data tunnel.
